My 17 year old son is currently taking driving lessons and I'm trying to organise some insurance for one of the family cars (both for pre- and post-test driving).

Assuming a Fiesta 1.25 finesse (wife's car) any experience on the cheapest company? I know that there are comparison sites, but I also know that they do not cover many of the specialist insurers. I am also in a quandry as to whether he should be a named driver on wife's policy (she has full NCB) or whether it would help him to insure him in own name and have the wife as a named driver. She will do the majority of the driving in the car so I guess she should be the policy holder (but the insurance co may not believe that!).
Experience of anyone who has recently been through this process would be valued.

Cheers.

The main driver has to be the policy holder. Most try to use "fronting" to have parent on a policy for their child as a named driver - and is never going to get no claims discount, not fully insured, etc.

The cost is going to depend where you live. My step-sons first car was a Panda 4x4 (H plate) in 2004. About £1700 TPFT!!! And he was 18. His dad paid that. His latest car third party or fully comp with three years no claims discount between £700-900 depending on insurer. And he's now 21 and not 18!

Last year I found a broker as a result from calls from Swinton (from price comparison site) that was cheaper but only TPFT and monthly payments was via a finance option. Worth a call maybe? GSI Southern was their name. They are actually the cheapest again but not sure I want to use them for him with the restrictions imposed on changing policy.

I know about 'fronting' and its not the case here. My wife really will be the main driver. I am just keen to get the lad behind the wheel so that he can get some experience rather than just have the formal lessons.
Once he passes the test we will strictly control his driving (no taking mates out at night etc.). He's a good lad, does as we advise most of the time, and very safety minded. Totally different to how I was at his age!

Not doubting you or the lad. If your wife with good NCD then some policies will no longer protect. I am not being negative.

For the cost of insurance it could work out as cheap to use a good instructor to learn and re-evaluate later. I know of lots who pass and then not drive for a bit - I did the same many years ago. But when you do need insurance the question is how many years have you had a license and not how much you have driven ;-)

If your wife is the main driver and you want to accumulate NCD for your son then I think it's DirectLine that can help (stand to be corrected). But they might not be cheapest.

Hi, I had a fiesta when my son was 17 and I was insured through tesco with full no claims and protection. It does depend what post code you live in but mine increased from £200 to £600 for the year to add him onto the policy, had he insured through his own name the policy would have been alot higher. I did it that way until my son was in full time work and could afford the yearly policy himself and start to collect his own no claims bonus. Liverpool Victoria have reasonable rates for young drivers also.

I will second the DirectLine option.

Went through the same exercise with 17yo daughter and wife's 1.4 Astra. Wife's original insurer (Budget) wanted to increase from £240 to over £1,200 with daughter as named driver. DirectLine quoted £620 and daughter earns no claim bonus.

-"The main driver has to be the policy holder."
-On my broker's advice, and despite my asking several times "Are you sure that is okay?", I am the policy holder of SWMBO's car but she is the main driver. And it says so, in black and white, on the policy statement.

If your wife really will be the main driver and your son not, there's no reason you can't legitimately have him as an addtional named driver.
It'll be swings & roundabouts re him earning his own NCB, or not, depending on the insurer, in these early years.

On a sidenote, my stepdaughter, 18, just passed her test and started her own insurance for her own car (zero NCB). We hunted round quite a bit, and the cheapest we managed to find (by quite a margin: £835 as against £1100+ for the modal average), was from Bullseye.

I used Liverpool Victoria tinyurl.com/3xqnbo for my 17 yr old daughter as a named driver. The cheapest I could find after hours of searching. It still offered ncd protection for my wifes ncd. I also did an example quote based on a male, (son next year) this also appeared very competitive.

Same for me on Mrs BP's car.

On the young driver thing, this goes back a few years, but we, and many of our friends, used CIS (Co-op) on any any driver policy, with the general rider of young drivers (under 25) declared.

This was way cheaper than anything else we could find - going back 10yrs (bear in mind insurance premiums generally probably haven't gone up in that time) it was £400 for a 1.6 Clio (ins group 6). It did creep up year on year and we changed a couple of years ago to a named driver policy with Liverpool Victoria.

Can\'t remember the exact figures but when my sister put her 18 year old son on the insurance, it jumped by several hundred pounds. A few months later she then added her 17 year old daughter, and the insurance reduced and she got a refund!!

adding him as a learner should be easy - he\'s a better risk.
He may get a much better insurance deal if he takes the Pass Plus course after passing his test.
Explain your details when you get your quote - if they don\'t believe you then don\'t take out their policy. I had this problem with one insurance on agreeing the main driver.
Take their name and date/time should you ever need to confirm the conversation.

There\'s no logic to insurance quotes, so just phone around/ surf for a good deal
