  • Hit and Run follow up 8 Sep 2002 (Forum)
Yesterday a 34 year old male was sentenced, as the driver involved in this incident, at Leeds Crown Court to 2 years imprisonment and banned for 10 years for: Causing Death by dangerous driving (of the four brakes on the car only one was working and that was impaired) Failing to stop after an accident. Failing to report an accident. No Insurance. Driving Licence irregularity. Apart from the emotional bang the hastard how do we stop such people from being on the road and is this a fair punishment?
  • Correct fluid/oil types ?? 29 Aug 2002 (Forum)
How important is it to stick to exactly the same make and/or type of brake fluid, coolant, engine oil, power steering fluid etc. etc. when topping up their levels ? My Volvo manual states for example that I should top up with their own coolant (type C - blue/green @ 50% water/50% coolant) but doesn't seem to give a specification for this that I could try to match elsewhere at less cost.
  • Service intervals 17 Jul 2002 (Forum)
I'm sure this must have been discussed before but came to my mind reading a post in another thread when DAve W mentioned difficulty in assessing potential brake pad wear with longer service intervals. I don't care what the manufacturers say, unless you do your 12K- 20K over 6 months or less, any car needs to be given the once over, if not a full service, at least twice a year and items like pad wear, condition of exhaust system, steering and suspension units et alia, should be reported on as a matter of course on those occasions.
  • MOT failure points? Newbie query. 11 Jun 2002 (Forum)
How badly corroded do brake disks have to be in order to fail the MOT? Is there somewhere on the net that has photos of what would fail and what would pass? I have just bought a car which was MOT\'d on Saturday and I have noticed that the rear driver\'s side disk has quote corroded, worse than the rear disk on the other side, and the outer edge has chunks missing out of it but not within the area swept by the pads.
  • the unbreakable car 5 Apr 2002 (Forum)
Every part tested to destruction far beyond any road user could emulate. And then we hear of manufacturers recalls on new models with such items as wheel bearings, brake disks, handbrake cables etc etc which have built in design faults. And yet a component such as a wheel bearing which had been perfected decades ago to the extent that on some models they simply never failed during the life of the vehicle.
  • ABS Awareness! 23 Nov 2001 (Forum)
Three teachers (ladies) talking about ABS; they were aware that their car(s) were fitted with ABS, but one individual, describing what happened when she braked in the prevailing conditions, 'the pedal started banging and thumping so I took my foot off it straight away!' How many drivers (off both sexes) are not aware of how ABS manifests itself? Also how the pedal effects can vary from car to car, and what you should do, and not do.
  • Main Dealer Rip Off 3 Mar 2001 (Forum)
I had a sticking piston on a dual piston front brake. I booked it in to a Toyota main dealer to have the piston freed off and new pads. i was told that they had tried to free it but failed, and I needed a new caliper £358 + VAT, (which was not in stock) new discs £240 + VAT the pair, and new front pads £68 + VAT Plus labour.
  • calculating tyre sizes 20 Dec 2000 (Forum)
I need to know this so that I can calculate the speed that I can get on the road. Can anyone help, or do I need to measure actual tyres? (the car will be running disk brakes, front roll bar, and spax adjustable gas shockers to cope with the increase in power)
  • The complete driver. Why worry? 27 Apr 2003 (Forum)
When one is particularly annoyed with the driver of a car ahead, one may use the headlights to gently cook the driver and occupants. For this reason, it is good to set the headlamp aim rather high. The brakes Modern cars have immensely powerful brakes and anti-lock systems. It is impossible to brake too hard. Much fun may be enjoyed by giving braking tests to following vehicles. Motorcycles are particularly good sport.
  • GS 1200 brief road test 28 Aug 2006 (Forum)
With a shortish inside leg similar to my 28" he's had the seat lowered, but even so I was on absolute tiptoes when stationary with both feet down. Start up, and the characteristinc BMW flat twin wobble mildly oscillates the bike. Tweak in the brake lever and the servo pump spins up to speed; yes servo assisted brakes, and I loved them though thankfully didn't have reason to sample the ABS. Light (one finger) but with stacks of feedback and feel.
  • Kia Ceed 3 - Dual Clutch Transmission review 22 Nov 2017 (Forum)
More so, car should be placed in N for all stops including stoppage at traffic lights on flat ground. Leaving the car in D and then using parking brake is not advised in the handbook (if you do so, the car will possibly move it to N from D internally as handbook says you must do D-N-D routine to move the car again if you apply parking brake while in D).
  • Ford Mondeo - Rant about blatant lies from second hand dealer 10 Sep 2015 (Forum)
I don't know why, just taking him at his word. When I actually got some time to check it at home I found the brake fluid below minimum, the coolant below minimum and the washer fluid empty. The brake fluid was the most alarming obviously... Unforunately, being a diesel when I dipped the oil it was already black so I have no way of knowing if it was actually changed.
  • Citreon C3 Aircross - Advice on order of process 11 Jan 2025 (Forum)
Due to being hospitalised for three months almost 2 years ago and my recovery to "normality" has been long and slow, my car has been sat in my garage all that time and never moved and off the road for both tax and insurance,  Ironically I bought it brand new just a few weeks before everything went to pot,   My recovery to my new normal state has meant that although now that I am in a better state to drive, I am unable to use the brake with my right foot as I cannot lift high enough from the accelerator.  After a driving assessment a few weeks ago it was agreed that I could drive again with a push control in place of the brake.
  • Peugeot 2008 1.2 puretech 130 EAT6 Allure Premium - five year report 19 Oct 2024 (Forum)
As an oldie’s runabout it has an easy life apart from my occasional red-line ‘Italian tune-up’.  I have just done a wheels-off preMoT inspection and general clean up. Brake pipes were painted with some old Hammerite and a fair bit of rust was hammered off the disc rims.  There is of course no sign of underbody rust. The Goodyear Vector 4seasons tyres (oddly I had thought they were Michelin Crossclimates) swapped front to rear at 15,500 miles, still have 3mm of tread; the front brake pads 4mm and the rear pads 5mm.
  • Renault Grand Scenic - Replace or wait? 19 May 2022 (Forum)
I was looking to replace last year but the prices rocketed and have been the same or worse since. Basically it's starting to get more issues. A few weeks ago the rear passenger side brake caliper was stuck on and I couldn't get it off the driveway. This was the final straw for me at the time and I vowed to get rid. The fault was one of the cables to the caliper had snapped (EPB).
  • Van man 2 May 2020 (Forum)
Here’s a wee list of them over the years and my views. 85 B Hyundai Pony Pickup known as Harry Hyundai. This thing was awful in every way. Terrible to drive, downright dangerous brakes and unreliable to boot. I hated every moment of driving it. 90 H Toyota Liteace 1.5 - Lethal handling, almost as if each wheel was pulling in a different direction. Slow and noisy but tough and reliable. 93 L Toyota Liteace Mk II 2.0D - What a difference, a genuinely great wee van. 90 H Mitsubishi L200 2.5D - Tough as old boots, never went wrong but rear brakes locked up as soon as you looked at the pedal. 93 L Vauxhall Astra 1.7D - Great motorway pounder. 81 W Renault 4 GTL 1.1 - Brilliantly weird and surprisingly comfortable and very reliable but sadly it had holes in the floor by its 5th birthday so it had to go. 86 D Renault Extra 1.4 - Great wee van, kept it 14yrs and it suffered no major failures. 00 X Renault Kangoo 1.9 - Should’ve been great with simple old tech engine and well designed interior but it kept suffering electrical faults and went at 6yrs. 06 06 Renault Kangoo 1.5dci - Great wee engine, a vast improvement on the 1.9.
  • Daihatsu Skywing - Hub-Over-Disk Risk 16 Mar 2020 (Forum)
t=110241  I'd stripped and cleaned the passenger side caliper before the vacation. There now seems to be less brake drag, and less of a temperature rise, but there is STILL a consistent temperature differential between the passenger and driver side drive shaft end of about 10 degrees C after two successive 20k-ish night time runs.
  • Corsa 1.2 16V 2010 - Corsa 2010 Sub Frame Corrosion 20 Aug 2018 (Forum)
When I looked up the MOT history I was pretty worried to see :- August 15th 2018 :- Pass No advisories August 14th 2018 :- Fail :- Do not drive until repaired (dangerous defects): Front Sub-frame has excessive corrosion which adversely affects braking or steering (6.1.1 (c) (ii))   February 7th 2018 :- Pass :- with Advisory notice item(s) : Front Sub-frame corroded but not seriously weakened (2.4.G.1)   February 6th 2018 :- Fail :- Reason(s) for failure : Nearside Front Sub-frame corroded and seriously weakened at lower arm fixing (2.4.G.1)   ie 6 months after a sub frame repair in February it had a serious defect again.
  • BMW 5 Series - BMW 520D - AA Warranty - Cargiant bad experience 17 May 2017 (Forum)
Much to my surprise AA have stated they won't pay for brake pads, any wear & tear and only pay labour up to £40 an hour .They are yet to confirm if the clutch /flywheel will be covered also. They are yet to send their engineers out so as you can imagine im without a car.Courtesy car isn't covered at level of warranty I purchased I was told. You'd think Gold would be the highest standard.
