  • Vauxhall Signum - Random EML 15 Jul 2022 (Forum)
Hi, Hopefully a small, weird one, but I have newly acquired a 1.9CDTI Signum (2006) and noticed one of the brake lights was not working. I’ve reconnected it and the spanner in car light came on. That’s fine, turned ignition off and back on again and it stayed off. However the EML was then on. But when I remove the brake light bulb the EML stays off Any ideas over why and what I can do?
  • N?A - Most recently answered questions 5 Aug 2020 (Forum)
I have been following these on the main page as they are frequently  more interesting than those on the forum. This one has been posted today and I am wondering how too much oil would affect the brakes or caused the car to over rev? A mechanic said he poured in three litres of engine oil - which was too much and the car over revved. Now brakes won't work. He said he poured in too much as the oil measuring case was broken and not reading correctly.
  • Ford Focus 1.6 2003 auto - How to know when your rear break shoes get low? 25 Feb 2017 (Forum)
I have had the car since 2006 when it had less than 9000 miles on the clock. It now has 75000 miles and I do not remember ever having had the rear brake shoes replaced. I have been reading the owners manual and Haynes manual but there is no mention of a warning light when the shoes get low only for when the brake fluid is low. I understand the minimum recommended thickness of the shoe is 8mm.

  • Nissan Almera 1.5SE ((2005) - knocking noise at slow speeds 29 May 2012 (Forum)
After driving a few miles each day (enough for the car to warm up) it would make a knocking noise with each rotation of the wheel when  braking at lower speeds . This was looked at and the anti rattle springs were replaced (last Thursday). This seemed to have fixed the problem, however, today I noticed the exact same knocking noise when slowing down and accelerating in busy traffic but WITHOUT braking!

  • Audi A4 B6 (2001 - 2005) - 02 1.8 ABS warning light comes on randomly 14 Apr 2009 (Forum)
It can happen after 100 yards or 100 miles of starting the ignition. There is no pattern or obvious reason. e.g. it does not happen while braking. The brakes and ABS system appear to work fine. Switching off the ignition cures the problem, but it happens again sooner or later. I'm selling the car soon, so wouold like to avaoid any great expense.
  • Volkswagen Polo III (2000 - 2002) - 2001 1.0l 71,400 miles. EPC light is on 30 Mar 2009 (Forum)
Hi, The EPC light has flashed up on my polo. I have done a bit of research but i want to be as sure as can be.. Yesterday, I noticed a brake light was out so i checked the other lights too but left them on accidentally, so i had to jump start the car because the battery was dead. This worked ok and the brake light bulb was replaced and everything was fine.
  • AWFUL lane discipline 5 Dec 2008 (Forum)
well there are 3 lanes on the motorways, but plenty of idiots do not move over to the left, so there is always 3 lanes going at 40-60 Mph, and as soon as someone brakes in any lane, everyone brakes and further back, the traffic is down to walking pace. It was obvious thst the traffic would flow perfectly if people kept to the left. The journey took 5 hours instead of the usual 2 1/2 and this is a major reason why our motorways are not working as they are intended.
  • Peugeot 406 HDi egr/wastegate valves 19 Jun 2007 (Forum)
One of them (I think the left/offside) is making a chattering/pinging noise when the engine is turned off, lasts about a minute, but can be stopped by repeatedly pressing the brake pedal. It also chatters away to itself whilst driving but I'm not familiar with where the pipes go or how the braking circuit is involved. Is this likely to be the valve itself or bunged up pipes?

  • BMW Servicing 22 Apr 2007 (Forum)
Dashboard computer states oil change needed now (May2005 or 14,000 miles), along with air microfilter. however also has a sign stating front brake pads at 9000 miles. Does this mean check them now or change them. There is no way it can need brake bads, discs and pads visible through wheels are like new. Pad warning light NOT on.BTW plugs good for 60,000 miles.
  • MOT failure Fiesta - fix or scrap? 1 Nov 2006 (Forum)
Took my 95N Fiesta classic 1.8 diesel for it's MOT today and it failed on the following: -both front and 1 rear brake pipe corroded (1 rear was done last year) -Offside front suspension balljoint escessive play -hand brake efficiency only 13% (they say it needs a new cable, I reckon it just wants the adjstment tighting) All in they quoted me £300 to get it to pass.

  • Newbie Diesel Driver 2 Dec 2004 (Forum)
Or do they just fire up and thats it - idle curiosity on my part. Also I am surprised by the lack of engine braking on the motorway as I keep bowling up behind things after having lifted off expecting the engine to halt my progress more than it does. I thought the higher compression ratios would give me more engine braking than say my 1.8t Golf that I used to drive.
