2021 Land Rover Discovery revealed with new engines and hybrid tech

Published 10 November 2020

Land Rover has given the Discovery a midlife makeover. The premium 4x4 SUV gets hybrid tech, new engines and a much-improved infotainment system. The 2021 Discovery will reach showrooms in the spring with prices starting from £53,090.

The 2021 Land Rover Discovery is powered by a new range of straight-six petrol and diesel engines, which feature mild-hybrid technology to lower tailpipe emissions and boost fuel economy. Land Rover hasn't released its official fuel economy figures, but it is promising "six-cylinder performance and four-cylinder efficiency".

The 3.0-litre diesel line-up kicks off with the powerful D250, which develops 249PS and 570Nm of torque at 1250-2250rpm. If you need more power and torque then the D300 will be the diesel for you with 300PS and a thumping 650Nm from 1500 to 2500rpm.

The 2021 Discovery is available with the choice of two petrol engines. The entry-level 2.0-litre unit is the only four-cylinder engine in the line-up. It develops 300PS and 400Nm of torque at 1500-4500rpm. The six-cylinder P360 produces 360PS and 500Nm of torque between 1750 and 5000rpm.

As before, the Discovery is four-wheel drive only and all models use a sophisticated air suspension system to iron out road imperfections. If you want a class-leading off-roader, however, you'll need to fit the optional Terrain Response 2 system that will optimise the Discovery to cope with sand, snow and heavy mud.

There are important updates inside the cabin, too. The slow and confusing 10-inch touchscreen has been replaced with a new 11.4-inch Pivi Pro system that should be easier to use thanks to a simplified menu structure and improved screen change times. A built-in back-up battery means the navigation start-up now takes just a few seconds, while the simplified menu system allows the most commonly used functions to be accessed directly from the customisable home screen.

In addition to the slick, new infotainment screen,  Pivi Pro will also download over-the-air updates, which means you won't need to visit your local dealer to update the system software or navigation maps.

The dashboard has also been redesigned and the Discovery can be fitted with a smart, new cabin air ionisation system that monitors incoming air quality. It automatically uses filters to reduce the level of allergens, toxins and harmful particulates in the cabin.

All versions of the Discovery get seven seats and lots of useful storage, with dozens of pockets, cup holders and USB charging points. All of the rear seats can be folded flat to provide 2391 litres of storage, while the split fear tailgate doubles as a handy bench for changing muddy shoes or boots. Even with seven seats in place, the boot provides a useful 258 litres

The exterior of the Discovery has been given the lightest of updates, with new bumpers, grille and LED lighting. The offset rear numberplate, however, remains.
