2019 Renault Clio revealed: French Fiesta rival packed with tech

Published 29 January 2019

Renault has revealed pictures of its new Clio hatchback, ahead of it going on sale in summer 2019, with prices expected to start in the region of £14,000.

A rival to the Ford Fiesta, Peugeot 208 and SEAT Ibiza, the new Renault Clio is looking to boost its small hatch appeal with the focus on tech and practicality. Renault is also promising more upmarket materials on the inside - while the exterior takes a bit of an evolutionary approach.

A new 9.3-inch multimedia screen sits in the middle of the soft-coated dashboard, while a digital instrument binnacle replaces the conventional analogue dials behind the steering wheel. Measuring seven or 10 inches depending on spec, the digital dash will let the driver tailor the display to include navigation directions and maps - similar to the systems used in more premium vehicles like the Audi TT.

The seats are as comfortable as those found in more expensive cars, says Renault, while their clever design makes for a spacious-feeling car, despite its external dimensions being smaller than the outgoing model.

The 2019 Clio has one of the largest boots in its class with 391 litres, which puts it ahead of the Ibiza and more expensive Polo when it comes to outright carrying capacity. The rear seats can also be folded flat to create more room, and a double floor should help distribute loads.

While Renault has hinted that hybrid versions of the Clio are in development, the new model is likely to launch with a range of conventional petrol and diesel engines. Buyers will be able to choose from a 1.0-litre in turbo and naturally-aspirated petrol flavours, as well as a 1.5-litre diesel.

The new Clio will be available in R.S. Line guise - a replacement for the former GT-Line. This offers sporty looks and an interior inspired by Renault Sport models, without the more expensive running costs of a true hot hatch. It takes a similar approach to Ford's Fiesta ST-Line, with a honeycomb grille and 17-inch wheels contributing to its sporty looks.

Although prices are yet to be confirmed, expect a small increase over the current model's £13,615 when the 2019 Clio goes on sale later this year. We'll find out more about the fifth-generation Renault Clio when it makes its public debut at the Geneva Motor Show 2019 in March.
