Production starts for the 2013 Ford Fiesta

Production of the facelifted Ford Fiesta, Britain's best-selling car since 2008, is now underway prior to the car going on sale in January 2013.

The upgraded car continues a model line that started in 1976, with 15 million examples sold globally - and for 2013, it's going to be cleaner than ever, with no less than seven model derivatives - both diesel and petrol - dipping under the 100g/km barrier.

The most prominent visual change, first revealed at the 2012 Paris motor show, is the adoption of the 2013-style Mondeo grille and front-end, but the changes go deeper, with upgraded interior and additional equipment. The new Fiesta also debuts the 'MyKey' system in Europe – a Ford-exclusive technology that allows owners to control various parameters, such as top speed and radio volume, for other drivers using the car with a configurable key.

New Fiesta also features voice-activated in-car connectivity system SYNC; Active City Stop that helps drivers avoid low speed collisions; and SYNC Emergency Assistance that directly connects vehicle occupants to local emergency services operators after an accident.

The new Fiesta will be offered with Ford's three-cylinder 1.0-litre Ecoboost petrol engine in 99bhp and 118bhp forms, and also the new 79bhp 1.0-litre petrol engine, a 1.25-litre with either 59bhp or 81bhp, and a 104bhp 1.6-litre. A new 74bhp 1.5-litre TDCi diesel engine joins the Fiesta range, the other diesel option is the existing 94bhp 1.6-litre. Prices start at £9795.
