Beetle Goes Diesel

Wed, 09 Jan 2002
VW has finally announced a RHD diesel version of its Mexican-built front-wheel-drive Beetle.

Instead of the punchy 130bhp TDI PD and a sporty look, the new car has a sensible specification that more closely encapsulates the spirit of the original rear-engined Beetle.

For £14,175, you get the 100bhp 1.9 TDI PD engine developing 177lb ft torque at 1,800rpm. Equipment includes ABS with Electronic Stability Programme, four airbags, remote central locking with alarm, electric front windows and, importantly, air-conditioning. You don't get alloy wheels as standard.

Top speed of the new car is a comfortable 111mph and 0-60 a respectable 12.0 seconds. Combined consumption is 53.3mpg, stretching to 64.2 in the extra urban cycle, and CO2 output is 143g/km keeping the car in the lowest diesel £110pa VED bracket.
