There is a hole in the back of the fan bearing bracket through which you can insert an 8 AF Hex key. A long central bolt then unscrews (RH thread) to enable the fan assembly to be pushed forwards. The fan belt drum will turn during the attempt - there are two holes in it to take a VAG holding tool which is like a pegged fork.
Alternatively, saw the head off the offending bolt and reassemble the alternator with a length of M8 studding, spring washer and a nut. Then, no problems next time.
