Passat 2L Petrol 04 Reg. - Alternator Removal - David Farmer from Cape Town

Hi Guys. Can anyone help me with the removal of an alternator? i cannot clear the lower securing bolt from the alternator as the viscous fan is in the way, must this be removed? How?

There is a hole in the back of the fan bearing bracket through which you can insert an 8 AF Hex key. A long central bolt then unscrews (RH thread) to enable the fan assembly to be pushed forwards. The fan belt drum will turn during the attempt - there are two holes in it to take a VAG holding tool which is like a pegged fork.

Alternatively, saw the head off the offending bolt and reassemble the alternator with a length of M8 studding, spring washer and a nut. Then, no problems next time.

Passat 2L petrto 04 Reg.- Alternator removall Thanks for your reply and help. I have sawn that damm bolt so will try the thread bar option, need to change the thermostat and am busy taking the inlet manifold off to remove the small metal hose which connects to the housing.

Never again, prefered my old 70's Alfa's.

Will keep you posted on progress.
