I think I know what you mean and it is one of these new 'fads'. For example you see the odd tarted up VW Golf sporting the German style plates. I think it is a fashion thing more than a blatant attempt to avoid law enforcement, but I don't know?

They went out quite a few years ago, 1990, due to the security problems with PIRA, they were for families and private cars. Military plates are 2 numbers 2 letters 2 numbers. 1995 onwards 2 letters 2 numbers 2 letters.

Sooty what you describe, I think, are military plates for military vehicles, lorries, tank transporters bowsers and the like. When I was in Germany in the 70s our private cars were registered 2 letters, 3 numbers and a B. Then the plates became so obviously British Military we went over to what looked like normal UK civil plates and that system continues to this day although there very few people left in Germany to issue them to!

Yes I wasn't clear that were two sets one for mil vehicles and another for private cars. Now you can get either uk or german plates depending on if you buy RHD or LHD out in BFG.
