Any ideas from where it comes - only a small bit - does seem slightly oily although I imagine it must traverse some oily bits to get there!

Have you recently had a service? Sounds like the oh so common pollen filter cover being incorrectly fitted after replacement

The pollen filter is on the passenger side. I think I would check for a damaged membrane behind the door trim first.

If it looks oily, then it may be from the clutch slave clyinder. If your car is manual transmission, I would have it looked at.
