How Much???!!! - Miller
A colleague at work recently bought an N reg Vectra as he was sick of having to keep forking out to repair the bangers he has owned in the past. Anyway, after a couple of months of trouble free motoring on comes the dreaded ABS warning light - two weeks before it was due an MOT! (a fail point).

Took the car to a couple of Vauxhall dealers, one quoted £1200 to fix, the other £600 - £1500 "depending on the problem" (i.e. £1500). Needless to say he is not very happy and working plenty of overtime!

See letter below abs waning light

Is there a letter underneath the ABS warning light?
If it's waning, is that like the moon? i.e. getting smaller?

I'm continually astonished at UK repair costs! What is the major component in a repair like this? How can the shop tell from just a warning light what the cost will be? Or was there a detailed inspection to get to these figures?

Could be something silly like a brake light bulb(s) pedal switch or most likely one of the front speed sensors. Even if its the ECU it isn't going to cost you all the limbs the dealer wants to amputate. Take it to someone who knows about ABS (independent Bosch or Lucas specialist)

Absolutely right,in fact every ABs problem I have had,or my chums have had,was a wheel sensor.
Bar one,but that was warrantable.
