Saab 95 2.2 TiD Engine malfunction light - saab95tid
Model 2002, (new front) 2.2 TiD. I have dicovered that the Engine Malfunction Light is not an uncommon problem. The light has come on countless times, sometimes with loss of turbo and sometimes not. After long journeys it'll come on and stay on for longer. A Saab garage in Germany looked at it and solved the problem, (short term and free of charge) by removing a cover under the bonnet and cleaning a 'sensor'. Is there a route cause to this problem or can anyone offer a list of possible causes? I don't want to get ripped off when I go to a Saab dealer on this side of the water!

See my reply to your previous thread - go to www.saabscene.com/saabforum/postlist.php/Cat/0/Boa...2 and ask the same question. HTH.

Here is a link to a long running saga my partner had with her 9-3 Tid. Engine warning light now and again but no apparent problem and then disaster!

Listen to what Mike H says too - he is a helpful expert! Good morning Mike!

There are lots of different reasons for the CEL (check engine light in Saab speak) to come on. Could be something very minor or something more serious that it would be risky to ignore.

Definitely go to Saabscene, theres tons of expertise there.

You would be best finding a good independant Saab specialist in your area, where abouts in the country are you? For a modest fee you could have 15 minutes plugged into a Tech2 diagnostics computer to see if any fault codes have been logged, and then decide whether you want any work doing or not. Last time I had mine checked it took 2 minutes and I wasn't charged anything.

Thanks Rich 9-3. I'm calling into the Saab dealership tomorrow, (once I've washed the car and cleaned the interior)! I'm going to mention that in Germany they didn't charge for such tests and we'll see what they say. I need it fixing at the end of the day and the longer I drive it, the more chance I have of causing more damage. I'll post the news back here as to what they say. Have you ever had any trouble with the display for the stereo/info screen on the dash? Mine is missing pixels left right and centre! The CD player doesn't work either so I can only play what I put into the changer in the boot. I've got a pair of stereo 'hooks' but no amount of pulling and tugging will release the stereo. I've yet to try a winch on it though!!

Hope you got your car diagnosed okay and the result wasn't too painful!?

Re: Display missing pixels. This is a common fault on 9-3's and 9-5's. I have lost a couple of pixels occasionally but luckily they have come back. The display is known as the SID (Saab Information Display). If you do a search on Saabscene there are a couple of bodge fixes to DIY, plus also people you can send it away to, to fix it for you: snipurl.com/u586
Here is one of the bodge fix methods: www.saab9-5.com/howto/sidrepair.htm

They also come up for sale on Ebay, but there are different types, SID 1 or SID2, depending on the spec. level of your car so need to make sure you get the right one. If you look in your owners manual, you will be able to work out which SID type you have.

Cheers,

Rich.

Thanks Rich. I done a bit of phoning around today as well as visiting my local Main Saab Dealer, {DELETED - No naming / shaming please - DD}. If anyone goes there then they are stupid. The guy was arrogant and the level of professionalism was low, really low.

There was none of the usual, 'Can I help you Sir?' Followed by the usual, 'I'm Such and Such, would you like to take a seat and we'll go over your needs/requests.' I left there fuming and there is no way they're getting my money. They quoted me 65 Vat for just the Diagnostic check.

I call another garage, Saab affiliated, and it would cost £35. Another one was £37.50 VAT so there's your difference between main dealers and other Saab garages. I'm goin to a place in Taff's Wels near Cardiff on Thursday.

He is pretty sure it's a sensor which is around 30mins work. I'm hoping so as it'll make a difference only paying £18 VAT! It is a Saab qualified technician! This place uses original parts and the guy mentioned that SID units have come down from £250 to £160. I have since looked on Ebay and found some folk who will repair the unit for around £50 - £60. I'm interested in the DIY approach too!

Your local chavs will remove it for you for a few beers, fags or spliffs; trouble is they may not pass it on to you when they have!
