406 headlights - Dzl
Hi all.

The headlights on a 406 come in 2 parts: The clear front and the grey plastic back that fastens to the car and holds the bulbs.

The clear fronts are obviously different between MKI and MKII 406s, the new ones being totally clear.

Are the backs the same? i.e., can you put a MKII clear front onto a MKI grey back (and vice versa)?

Doubt it. All those prismatic shapes in the front glasses of headlights (known as riffling I believe) act as beam deflectors and control the distribution of light. You'd lose that if you change them for clear.

I need to replace the back, not the front. I want put my mkII glass onto the mkI back.

What I'm saying is either combination probably won't work. The back designed for the the riffled front won't give the correct beam pattern with a clear front as the effect of the riffles is missing.

The back designed for a clear front doesn't need the riffled front, so again the beam pattern will be wrong.
