Ive been trying to look into this and find out what happens but it all seems a bit misleading when looking DVLA and web sites. If you purchase a car without a V5 (say from a reposession company) what are the problems, or how much hassle is it to sort out the new V5. In the wording of the DVLA such a sale is illegal, but this isn't applied to this scenario is it?
thanks

So long as you're buying from the LEGAL owner, one that has PROPER title to the vehicle, you've not got a problem.
Depends how many people have 'owned' it, without declaring themselves as registerd keeper, that I'd be concerned with.
Thats when mileges get reduced & history becomes vague.
If it's a dodgy sounding deal, walk away!!
Otherwise, DVLA will send you a new V5 in a few weeks.

Under the circumstances the V5 has been lost hasn't it?
So:
Post Office
Form V62 - complete
Cheque for 19 pound
Post to DVLA.
Should the "lost" V5 appear then return that to DVLA with covering note.
