Fog lights and the MOT - eurocourier
My fiance's Polo has one integral rear fog light in the offside cluster. The MOT tester passed it but told her there should be two. I think he's wrong, as my Sprinter has the same arrangement along with numerous other makes as far as I can see. What does the test require regarding this please?

MOT tester needs to go on refresher course.

Rear fog lamps
"The inspection of rear fog lamps is confined to the one rear fog lamp which is required to be fitted to the centre or offside of vehicles first used on or after 1 April 1980."

Thank you Gentlemen, much obliged.

Your mot tester

(a) thinks something should fail, but passes it anyway
(b) was wrong in the first place

I'd be looking for another MOT tester, and thinking about talking to VOSA or whatever the Vehicle Inspectorate are called these days

So if a car had 2 rear fog lights as standard, it would pass even if the left hand one didn't work?

I don't actually know this, but I doubt it would on the basis that a non-working rear fog will cause a fail because 'if it's fitted it must be working'.

Only the Offside rear fog lamp is testable.

As for 'if it is fitted it must be working'... this really only applies to hazard warning lights.

There are many things about an MOT test that will astound you. I should know. I am an MOT tester.

That's interesting. I have always thought the "if it's fitted it has to work" principle applied generally to MOTs.

My 1964 Triumph doesn't have to have rear seat belts, but they test them.
My Volvo has extra fold-down seats in the boot - they always unfold them and check the belts.
Flashing indicators are not compulsory on old cars, but the classic magazines always warn that if fitted, they have to work.
I have heard that a vehicle does not have to be fitted with lights, if intended only for daytime use, but if they are fitted, they must work.
All not true, you say?

it would pass yes even if it had a hole in it and showed white light , it would be illegal but not a testable item only know this because my mate is doing his mot course at the moment and some things would amaze you even though the explanation usually makes some kind of sense

as far as i can see,the tester was chatting up your fiance mate, simple as,report him anyway ,he might need a course on being civil to people or at being gentlemanly,

For the record; most German cars are fitted with two rear fog lamps but only the offside one is connected for the UK market. On many VW's the wiring is missing for the near side and/or the bulb holder is blanked off. I'm told that regulations in Germany allow the fitting of only one fog light on the offside or centre. This is to prevent confusion with the brake lights. It is usually quite a simple matter to wire up the second fog lamp on these cars although many people will argue about the necessity.

I go to the trouble of removing the blank in the reflector and fitting the bulb on the nearside as well ( VW and Volvo ). If it\'s that foggy that I need those lights to help people see me I,ll have both thank you, Regards Peter

Yes, my BMW has a bulb and holder in the NS rear fog, but it isn't powered up when you put the rear fogs on. Looks like a RHD wiring loom is used. It always passes the MOT as the single OS or centre rear fog light requirement applies in the UK too. I won't bother to wire it, as I think this issue of masking the brake lghts is valid.

If you have only one fog lamp and the bulb has gone then no fog light. Two lights one out still safer then none at all.
Fog lights and the MOT - DL
Most German cars are lacking one LH foglamp - usually cured by adding a bulb and sometimes cutting a hole in the rear of the NS cluster
