I am considering buying a late 1970's early 80's Merc 300sl and would like to ask the forum what I should be looking for (good points and bad) and obtain the generally held views of the vehicle.
This will be a weekend car used sparingly but would still like to buy the best possible on a budget of no more than 10K.
Any advice welcome.

Rust.
All rubber parts will have perished.
Rust
Rust
Rust.
Sludged up engine.
More rust.
Unless it is bodily in exceptional condition - and you garage and rust proof it.. it will rust and rust
Watch out for rust :-)

Oh yes, they rust, and rust and rust.
It's the big problem on old Mercs. I could point you in the direction of what I understand is apparently a rust free metallic red 350SL auto, under 60k, with beige leather upholstery at about £10k, garaged since new if you like. (Not mine & nothing to do with me.)

I thought old mercs didn't take well to unleaded, and were likely to have suffered valve wear. Certainly true for the W123 series, and have heard it said of others of similar vintage.

On the assumption that you can't join the MB Club before being an owner (only £30+ a year, including the best monthly car-club mag around), I could post your query there on the Forum bulletin board, where there are plenty of experienced owners and experts.

However, have a look at the site first and see if you can join before you are an owner. If you are serious about going ahead with the purchase, you'll get a lot of value out of the club.

I can also vouch for MBOC. Always lots of private "Dallas" SLs for sale in the mag as well as specialist dealer ads. I seem to recall a garage called "Silver Arrows" (or similar) always having some pretty nice stock.
Don't see why you can't be a member without owning an MB

Roger,
The simple answers are usually the best, I cannot believe I not think of it.
