Can anyone tell me if the above cars, I am assuming they have the Rover diesel engine and not the pug engine like its 218 predecessor. My question is this, Do the above cars suffer from the same head gasket problems as there petrol stablemates?

You are right, they are fitted with the Rover L-series direct injection lump. They are fast and economical but a bit noisy compared to the latest competition.
They are however very reliable with a proper headgasket made from stainless steel. They certainly don't suffer the same headgasket problems as the K-series did. (Apparently problems with the K series are now sorted but we will see....)
