I am new to this forum so please be kind :-)
I have a VW golf tdi and I have just replaced the tyres.
The original tyres were a "W" rating but I have been supplied with "V" rated tyres.
V rated are to a max speed of 149 mph
W are for a max speed of 168 mph
My car will only do 127 mph.
I cannot find any reference to the speed rating in the VW manual.
Am I legal?
My main concern is the insurance companies.

I would have thought so, manufacturers don't generally specify a tyre with a higher than neccessary speed rating due to the trade-off in comfort.

Our old 205 Dturbo came with H-rating tyres (130mph) which lasted 50K miles with front<>rear rotation. I then replaced all 4 with T-rating which were much easier to get. T is for 118mph, still well over the car's top speed. I think it is more important that all 4 tyres are equivalent than whether the car can exceed the rating speed?

Yes, you're legal.
V Rated tyres are pretty standard for your car.

As long as the max speed of your car is below the max speed of your tyre, then youve got no problems.

You should be aware, high speed rated tyres are fitted to cars which might put a lot of stress through the tyres even if they cannot exceed the speed rating. I.e. W rated tyres on a 2.0 turbo diesel that produces as much torque as some 4 ltr V8 petrol engines. That being said V rated should be fine for a TDI Golf.

Althought the term "speed rating" is used, "performance rating" might be a better description since factors such as acceleration, cornering, braking, vehicle load, as well as speed, all determine the forces imposed on tyres. So whilst the max speed of the car appears to be well within the limits for the tyres, the fact that it is a diesel probably means that there is an extra weight loading to be considered.
