Transport 2000 is largely funded by the rail industry I believe. To be fair to them, I think they would be horrified to be lumped in with re-claim the streets - totally different approach and aims.

The rail industry: only one where if government subsidies were withdrawn would charge £500 from London to Birmingham.

So how did the 4 separate rail companies that existed before nationalisation manage to make a profit? They didn't charge £500 (or its inflation-adjusted equivalent).
Do we need to bring back steam or something?

None of them made a profit. I believe the LNER didn't pay a dividend for years.
