Recommendations for a cheap in car cooling fan? - OceanMan

Hey all,

My air conditioning is pretty weak and I don't want to waste money on a regassing in case there's a leak in the system. I've looked online at plug in cooling fans but it's hard to tell which to buy. Any recommendations on a cheap (£30 or under) decent cooling fan?

I bought one for My Caddy van, it has two small fans (www.amazon.co.uk/BestFire-Adjustment-Rotatable-Ven...4) and i use it in conjunction with the ventilation. It does make a difference, eventually!. If the interior of the van is very hot, using them is just blowing hot air on yourself!, but once you are on the move, along with the ventilation, it does help. I actually have mine mounted on the bulkhead to blow down on the top of my head and down my neck but you probably couldn't do that in a car. I did originally have them on the dashboard but figured i'd be better having them where they are now. Not sure i could recommend it though, they worked fine for a while, but there seems to be issues with the connection in the 12v plug as i have to wiggle it about for ages trying different positions to get them to start working. Unless someone else has had a more positive experience, i think you'll just have to take a punt!

Plug in fans will be a waste of time - been there done that. If the aircon is working but just weak then I'd really suggest getting it regassed by a specialist who could also put a dye in it so a leak could be spotted if there is one. Almost all aircon systems eventually need regassing. I don't know what car you have but later implementations have solenoid diverter valves that can become sticky/seized. Usually easy to replace whilst the system is being re-gassed.

Simple answer, buy none. A fan will not cool the air, it will simply blow the hot air around the car.

You could try the old method of keeping pukka sahibs cool - drape wet towels over the seats and direct the fan onto them. But this method does require a bit of through-flow ventilation, the explanation of which would make this post too long.

Just use the heater fan, set to cold.

Bought the window air deflectors which seemed a good idea until one jammed to electric window and I decided to take them off.

But have ordered new pollen filters for both my cars and hope these may help.

The air con compressor has failed on my A4 and the system may have been polluted with debris. Virtually rights the car off .

Decided that I need a car with working air con. But which are reliable systems ???
