A recent spate of thefts locally which the police have little interest in gets me thinking what can be done to make it more difficult to steal the cat from daughter in laws auto Yaris which she has to leave on the road/ grass verge.

Apart from fitting a metal reinforcing cage , are these cars particularly vulnerable or is there benefit from parking them in a certain configuration ?... Read more

Hi everyone,

I bought a 2009 Peugeot 207 at the very end of July and it stopped working within less than a week due to a blown head gasket (had it sniff tested). As soon as I knew what was wrong, I spoke to the garage who sold it to me (recorded phone calls) and sent them letters to request a repair/refund under the Consumer Rights Act (recorded delivery), and all I've had in response is intimidation attempts or just ignoring letters. I'm at the point where I'm about to start a small claims process but before doing this I thought it would be a good idea to seek advice from people with more experience of what all this involves – hopefully someone here!... Thanks for the clarification, focussed, elek and Gibbo. Fortunately, I rejected within the 30 days so I don't have any issues with that, and I do have evidence of the sniff test (filmed and with documentation). From what you're all saying, it sounds like the claim would be seen as valid by the small claims court but that there might be some judges who don't look favourably on the fact that I didn't take it to the garage to give them a chance to fix it. This does seem to be a grey area that's a little open to interpretation because the CRA actually seems slightly contradictory on this, with one bit saying it should be repaired without any considerable inconvenience to the buyer and another bit saying that if I took it off the seller's premises myself then I should return it. Bit confusing when it comes to a car, whereas a kettle from Argos is a bit more cut and dried because it isn't the actual mode of transport used to take the item off the premises and it's not meant to be able to take me back when it starts showing faults!

I've a newly-purchased petrol Mazda3 which, compared to my old Golf is terrible for pulling to one side thorough puddles and generally feeling skittish in the wet. Brilliant in the dry though.... Read more

Yes it is self lubricating due to the free carbon as graphite in the iron.

However, modern practice on CNC machines is to use pumped coolant through the actual cutting tool, that's the white liquid that is an emulsion of water and soluble oil, because it eliminates the dust problem and washes the chips down away where they can be carried away on a conveyor....

What type of auto box is in the 3 series estate from 2012 to circa 2018? Torque convertor, cvt or clutch (dsg style)?
Thanks

ZF who make the gearbox advise a service and fluid change at approx 8 years or 100000 kms. It is DIY possible if you are confident and have all the tools.

This doesn't seem to have received much attention - in the 'old days' it perhaps would have been on the HJ news page.

Apparently the UK government applied to the UN to change the 'national identification' letters from 'GB' to 'UK' and this applies now.... Read more

Clearly displaying the country of origin of your vehicle is an international requirement and if you are stopped by French police without one you can be issued with an on-the-spot fine (although it’s unclear how bothered French police will be about the intricacies of UK v GB).

Particularly if you are anywhere near a french fishing port!

Evening all, I'm hoping somebody here can point me in the right direction as I'm stumped on this one.

Driving home tonight, slowed to 40 to go through a village and felt a judder which I thought was the road, went to change gear and felt instant drag when clutching, continued and then noticed the smell of a stuck brake. Pulled over and worked the handbrake/pedal a few times and it seemed to free off slightly. Got home and checked all 4 wheels for heat and to my surprise, both rear rims were too hot to touch. I can understand one sticking, but both? No idea.... Read more

You have a faulty ABS unit. Very common fault on the 1-series. Its holding fluid pressure to the rear calipers causing them to bind. Cure is to replace the unit. You may also find they brakes applying themselves when the wipers are switched on (I am not making that up!).

I was making mine up (apart from the first one)...

And no spare wheel !!!! just driving down the 'SMART' M6 the other day I noted a Jag being escorted by two traffic vehicles. The Jag was running on a flat front offside tyre. So I started to count shredded tyre carcasses both car and commercial over 30!!, so those emergency tyre sealants are not going to be of any use add also the price a ruined alloy wheel and you could be looking at well over £500 for a simple puncture. I always buy cars with spare wheels there are quite a few out their, the VW group, Renaults even my '66' Astra has one. It now seems a cheap option when buying my cars to add the £150 spare wheel.

Just as a thought ring up your local Kwik fit or Halfords and ask them to quote you for a new wheel and tyre and to have it fitted??? Handy to know how much money you need in your bank to pay for it.... Read more

I'm not sure I want a car with an "accusative windscreen"! Bad enough when my wife is in the car without the windscreen joining in.
