Hello
I am interested in a used second generation Picanto. Does it have a cambelt/timing belt or timing chain? And either way, what is the recommended replacement interval? Just so I k ow whne looking at the age and milage of the cars.... Read more
Love the alfasud sprint veloce, but would have been horrified if I’d bought one at how quickly it turned back in to iron oxide.
Is it actually possible to have a used 2 seater which is OK for an elderley passenger to get in and out?
Probably not.. But thought I'd ask.. ... Read more
It isn't so much the seat height, most of these 2 seaters have similar heights but access to the seat, and maybe more important some room to swing your legs in, could vary by extremes.
Jaguar and BMW sports cars i found to be the worst by miles, getting out of a Z4 i'd end up rolling out onto my hands and knees, Jaguars, particularly XJS i used to struggle shoe horning my legs under the steering column into the tunnel that served as footwell.
I have been advised by a local garage to replace these rear tyres due to cracking. I have only had them on 18 months. The tread depth is good. Are they pulling a fast one?

It is a moot point as to when over-cautious advice becomes 'pulling a fast one'. Just remember that a garage business, like any other business, is in the business of as much business as possible. Surface cracking is of no consequence and should not fail an MoT test, no matter how old.
A car tyre runs at quite a low pressure. Even if you pumped up an ancient tyre beyond its usually 40psi max to a low bicycle tyre pressure of 60psi - twice a car tyre operating pressure - it would still be unlikely to burst. The only thing to watch out for is gradually less grip as the rubber hardens with age. I noticed this some years ago with the twenty year old tyres on my low mileage TR7.
Hello, not posted for a while and looking for advice as usual :-)
Eldest is looking at a 2L 2015 diesel saloon with 65k on the clock.... Read more
I had a 2005 X type saloon with the Ford diesel engine. No problems but only had it a year and put 20k miles on it, then I came out of the company car scheme and bought my own. Didn't hear what happened to the Jag after that. But I would not really chance a second hand one, they can be money pits and hard to sell on.
Charlie Croker should use the proceed from The Italian Job to fund this car anyway!!!!!...
My car started running horrible and shaky last night. I called a breakdown service and they checked the faults which were logged as follows:-
I hope this is understandable, I am new at this stuff.... Read more
The car is now running as it used to. Seat say they had to by trial and error find that two ignition coils had suddenly packed up, causing false codes to be thrown out. Had all 4 coils replaced, and all faults cleared. Myself not sure that the defective coils could give so many fault codes, and not show up a misfire from a cylinder. Any views on this one?

I guess I'm not the first or last person to consider thiis, does anyone out there have any first hand experience? With CV-19 & possible retirement we might only need 1 car ibstead of 2. Is there an acknowledged legal way of preserving NCD? Do you swap main driver every 2? years or so? Are insurance companies wise to this and start declining claims/refusing insurance? I'm happy to ask them after doing some research before I spoil it for myself by saying the wrong thing. Read more
Great advice from everyone. We want to have the flexibility of going back to 2 cars with full NCD, particularly if one is a performance one for fun.
I saw a car on sale at a garage. It was an import. Full dealer history.
I did a quick check on the MOT history and my heart sank.

At a guess both 2014 figures are in Km. Difference is approx 370 miles; not really a lot in a fortnight.
By 2015 the car has been re-calibrated for miles and, by inference, mileage was re-started at 0*. There's reasonably consistent low mileage annual use after that. The fact it was tested on 14 April 2015 is fine. It was tested at first opportunity to make use of the concession that allows the May expiry date to be held....
Hi does anyone know where the Yaw rate sensor is located, I have looked under the bench seat, but not there, part number 4G0 907 637. Any help much appreciated. Read more
Are you just curious to know where it is, or do you suspect it's faulty?
Any of you experts have any experience of these as an occasional weekends driver to keep. I'll use it all year round with the roof down. I'm 6'4"... I see them advertised under 10k. I guess there are quite a few issues that could be an engine out job given its location. Read more
The talk of modified MX-5’s has just reminded me of a weekend back in 2012 spent driving and demonstrating a one-off MX-5 commissioned by Mazda to explore the possibilities of a faster, more focused MX-5.
Wrapped in orange vinyl, and with a few bodywork addenda, it sat on shorter springs and dampers, and had open sidedraught throttle bodies and modified cams. Power was quoted as 205ps.
It never went anywhere near even limited production, and the project seemed to disappear without a trace.
I do remember it having a lumpy idle because of the cams, and being a hoot to drive along the lanes of North Yorkshire.
