Nearly 20 years ago we spent the weekend with a friend 70 miles away. In the course of the visit we went to a large car boot sale in a field where I lost my car keys. I thought "I'll call the breakdown service and get them to take us and the car to our local garage". Not so - the handbrake was on so the car couldn't be towed or even winched on to a lorry. It would have to be lifted on and off, so a specialist vehicle would be needed. I opted to pay for a locksmith to come, open the car and programme a new remote key. A complication was that I didn't have a vital number ( I can't remember if it was for the key or the car), but a neighbour, who had a key to our house, found it for me. Once home, the spare key had to be reprogrammed to match the new one. In total, it cost £140, which sounds cheap now....

This is for Avant I think. When i look at the Legal Matters section, even if reading or posting a reply, when I come out I cannot get back onto the forum. I have to come completely out and back in again. I clicked the link to report faults but it takes me to the Ask HJ section. I do not have a question about a car or other motoring matter, simply to inform that the website is misbehaving. Can you help?

Staring out of my window on lockdown at the passing traffic, and watching people drive cars on TV, I estimate 80% of folk hold the steering wheel with one hand placed on the very top of the rim. Why?? I've tried it briefly and it's very awkward and uncomfortable - surely another indication the 21st century is doing to the dogs? Read more

Over the past few weeks it become very common to see shoppers in masks walking down the isles in the opposite way to the arrows that indicate the way you should walk just like the masks make them either immune or invisible. On one occasion a shop worker walked the wrong way and when I and other pointed out her error she laughed at us. When the shop was busier due to the impending bank holiday there were long queues for the tills and one shopper was insistent that the arrows had nothing t do with the way you should walk around the shop, they were only there when your were waiting for the tills, god hlep us if the queues got that long.

What do these people do when they are driving, do they ignore one way streets I wonder?... Read more

When out for a walk yesterday I did see a number of covidiots out and about, including some people having a party where several groups of friends drove there for a house party.

I reckon this government can't afford further lockdown, so they've no option other than to loosen restrictions and let the young build up 'herd immunity'. The covidiots are no great loss to society if they succumb fatally.

Me? I'm staying put.

I had the misfortune to visit a large diy store last weekend, parked and walked over to join the very long queue. I would have turned around, walked back to the car and left but my wife insisted in joining the queue. 50 minutes later, we got into the shop. Whilst in the queue, I saw signs stating that the car park is managed by a parking management company and any stay over 2 hours would be subject to a fine. Members of staff were occasionally walking up and down the que, I asked two of them separately if the 2 hour limit was still being enforced and both were unable to give me a definite answer. So, be warned, check how long you have spent in the car park to avoid a nasty surprise in the post. For info, we were 50 minutes in the queue and 40 minutes from entering the shop to returning to the car. In hindsight, not a pleasant experience that I will be repeating anytime soon, I would rather visit the dentist! Read more

As you Bromptonaut. I received a PCN at an Aldi. Long time ago now but it was ANPR monitored with a 90 minute parking time. I only stayed about 15 minutes. Went to see the manager and he examined my receipt and copied it and I heard no more. He did say he was fed up with doing this little exercise. If someone had the wit to examine the camera footage to verify matters it would help. My guess is, as a confirmed cynic when comes to parking companies, that they send them anyway and a lot of fools will just pay up. It is getting to the stage where I am keeping records of visits to these types of car parks, just in case.

Rather than a lengthy post here, I've submitted a report in the review section if anyone is interested. So far I am the only one to review this particular 2019 model, one of the last of the production run before the new 2020 (and much pricier - ours cost £17K on the road) model appeared. Read more

I presume you do all know about the 'Crumbling timing belt' issue of the PSA group 1.2 Pure tech engines ?

I do indeed. It was sorted by the time ours was made....

Thinking about the Nutter on the M25! The Driver probably doesn't have a Licence either. Also it's about time to Change the Plain Clothed Cars as they are too easy to spot these days! They need these Cars to be anonymous not Flash BMW's but unamusing Ford Focus' with RS gear. But the Electronics do have a role to play, to let the Police track Crims, once the onboard Camera has the Licence plate fixed then the Fixed Cameras can Locate and track. It doesn't matter if the plate is cloned, they track that plate on that Vehicle.

Also if we all had Trackers in our Precious Cars, more could be picked up by the Electronics and recovered before they get damaged.

Over 7os renew every three years and usually get a postal reminder in good time. Will we stil get a reminder or should we go on line and try to renew early? Read more

I have a medical driving licence which needs renewal every 3 years. It was due for renewal October 2020. The DVLA stated they were extending the renewal period for a further 7 months and I didn't need to take any further action, that they would write to me again when renewal was due.

I have had no communication from them and have tried contacting them via email and phone without success. I tried to renew online but it won't let me as it states my licence and photo are out of date.

Eventually I decided to apply with the form from the post office, which I did 2 weeks ago and have heard nothing.

As far as I can tell from the DVLA regulations I am still able to drive legally as nothing has changed from my last application.

It is making me very anxious because if I had an accident would I still be insured?

Lrac, unsure if I'm understanding your question correctly.

If you're asking whether somebody could brake fast enough (inside the detectable range of the camera ~ 1mi) to avoid detection, I don't think so. These are mainly laser based devices and therefore detect speed at a round-trip time close to:...
