hi all. am quite new to this and will offer help to anyone I can.
I have an issue with my astra. It started fine earlier and I wanted to clean it out as previous owner had a dog and it was full of hair. no offence to anyone just wanted to clean it lol. had the ignition on for a bit of radio whilst doing so and didn't think about the battery like a fool. so anyway, when I went to start it to move it back on my drive, it cranked over and slowly died. put some jump leads from my van to the astra ( the right way) and it just cranks of absolutely fine but will not fire up. has anyone any ideas what might need resetting or something that could of tripped when the battery died. it just doesn't want to fire up at all but will crank over fine or is there a set procedure to starting after battery has died or been replaced?... Just had a test drive in the new Toyota Prius. It is an excellent car and I would have placed an order for one except for the white sanitary ware that is part of the interior trim, will they supply a toilet roll holder in the excesory list. What was the design department thinking of? Read more
I see what you mean - a strange looking white urinal is the centre console - didn't there used to be a contributor on here who called himself Armitage Shanks? He would have liked that!
Hello all,
Hoping for a bit of help here - never had to diagnose emissions problems before.... Read more
I had similar problem, passed MOT for 3 years and garage was aware of emissions problem. Year 4, my luck ran out. Catalytic converter had to be replaced.
So my car currently is a mk1 Ford Focus 98-04 (it's actually 05 and on 65k) I'm looking to upgrade (downgrade?) to a smaller car and leaning towards a Mazda 2. I don't have the money to buy one outright so I'm going to get a loan or possibility finance depending on which works out better (and might pay a bit on a credit card) but I was thinking it's better to buy the car and then sell mine privately rather than trade it in to a dealer and probably get about half the price? Although it's something I have no experience with.
Anyway.. I'm hoping I can sell my car for around 11-1300 privately and I'm looking to spend between 2-3.5k (possibility could stretch it a bit to around 4) on the new car and I was wondering what people would think about my options, I'm thinking Mazda 2 (07-14), polo, fiesta and corsa mainly.
Any help massively appreciated. Read more
If there is the possibility of your moving to a company car in six months--with that car intending to be your sole vehicle--then there is absolutely no reason at all to do anything other than "think options" at the moment. Stick with what you've got till then.
Am I correct in thinking this?
If you had two new tyres put on the front wheels at the same time and after a while one of them is showing uneven wear, this is not a tie rods out of adjustment, but a worn steering part or suspension problem? Read more
My car has a problem that the near side front wheel always scrubs the outside of the tyre.
Probably due to the camber of the road (assuming you're in the UK). This pulls the car to the left, which you correct by applying a little 'right hand down a bit'. That puts a load on the outside of the front nearside tyre, causing it to wear....
The heat shield between exhaust and petrol tank has come loose and it has been suggested that it can be discarded because it is not necessary. This seems surprising and comments would be appreciated.
I collect discarded - fallen off - heat shields. The aluminium is useful in making beekeeping equipment (free of course).

Hi,
I have a low mileage 08 Combo van. I get a 'clonk' noise from the steering as I rock the steering wheel. This happen when driving and also when stationary. I don't think it's the rack or the track rod ends. It seems to be coming from the steering column universal joints. I'm not sure it is serious as it went through the last MOT like this. I'd just like to fix it.... Read more
That was it! I checked the bolt and it wasn't particularly tight. I gave it half a turn and the clonk is no more. Many thanks for your help.
