There is an Australian website with a name similar to the OP's chosen moniker, where the average UK reader of HJ will be delighted to find that "UTES" are available for hire, along with "PANTECHS".

It makes me chuckle, the way the Aussies abbreviate words. Dame Edna once sent that up in the memorable phrase about a friend of hers who had had a "hissie in the hossie".

I have a 2003 Ford Fiesta 1.4 Zetec 5 door. I've calculated that it's doing 35 mpg and it feels like it should do more. I also have a 2007 2.0 Zetec Diesel S-Max and that does 45 mpg and it's a much bigger car.

The fiesta is not thrashed and has a mix of dual carriageway and town driving typically, and probably 5% of the miles are motorway. The A/C is on more often than not.... Read more

It can depend on the way you drive, diesel engines are much more economical when driven gently as the throttle controls the ammount of fuel entering, the petrol engine runs on a fixed ratio of about 13/1 so you can't improve its efficiency much by the way you drive.

Of course you can....

I recently puchased a near new C200 estate. My annual milage is about 12000 miles. Is it worth to pay £30 per month (×12months) for the service pack? The sale pitch by the dealer is that all service consumables are included even the unexpected ones such as brake pads etc. and the car needs a servicing once a year minimum regardless of milage. Any comments are welcomed as I never own a mercedes before and don't know the cost of servicing. Read more

I have been trying to get hold of a rear windscreen wiper arm without success. I found one on ebay but they don't deliver to France where I live - have also searched french websites. My question is does anyone definitely know if there is a substitute wiper arm (maybe from a later Laguna) which will also fit my car. Read more

I have no idea...but I would assume its just a matter of finding one with the correct size splines and right length, do you not have breaker yards in france? (scrap yards)

Hi

I have a issue with the egr first the the battery went flat since then the warning light came on fault code PO404 which will clear, I got a second hand egr replacement which was tested and worked but still the same issue i have read so many posts on the subject until it gave me headache. I work away and travel 90 miles on the motorways i normaly get 52 mpg now its more like 46 mpg friday last week 57.2 mpg ? Do any of you guys know what parts are the main offender for this fault I have ordered a solenoid today. Also a chap i know says he can remap the ecu and turn off the EGR plus give the car a bit more BHP and MPG but i have some worries regarding the DSG box.... Read more

Railroad.

I would make a couple of suggestions. The fault code description says regulation range exceeded, and it would seem by the freeze frame data that the fault occurred while the engine was idling. This leads me to suspect that the EGR valve failed to close fully, or was prevented from closing fully which it should at idle. It could be sticking with carbon, or if it's electronically operated it could be faulty. This has happened before on these engines. Remove the EGR valve and check its operation with VCDS, and also give it a thorough clean. Whilst it's off check inside the manifold for carbon sludge build up, and if there seems to be a lot I'd consider removing it for cleaning too.

Hi there,

I'm not a car expert at all and having moved house, have taken my car to a new garage (masterfit) for a service and MOT. Things seem to be taking a long time and I'm concerned that I may be being taken for a ride.

The car didn't show any obvious problems when being driven prior to the service. I was told that there was uneven pressure being applied through the brakes and that it had failed the MOT because of this. They checked the friction of the various components in the system - this didn't solve the problem. They have now replaced the master cylinder which still hasn't fully solved the issue and they are now considering other options (valves and modulators have been mentioned). Does this seem reasonable? If the master cylinder hasn't solved the problem, I don't see that I should pay for it.

I'm concerned that they will suggest that the ABS unit is to blame - I don't see how this wouldn't show up on the diagnostics. Any advice would be really appreciated!!

hi did you ever cure problem got same problem on mine car tries to pull to the centre of road ,as if theres no pressure on one wheel until you press brake again

It started intermittently with the dashboard warning lights coming on showing ABS "STOP" faulty, Anti-Pollution Faulty, Braking System Faulty and then the battery light shows and the Speedo goes completely dead. Apart from the steering wheel that goes really hard, the car runs fine. This happened intermittently for a few months and then it just became permanent. I took the car to National Tyre who kindly plugged it into a diagnostic computer and it didn't show any connection. The technician sprayed some WD40 onto the terminals in the electric box next to the battery in the engine compartment thinking that there was a dead connection. It still didn't work. He recommends taking to a Peugeot Dealer and we all know that would be financial suicide and literally at the mercy of being bent over a barrel and the chances are they wouldn't have an exact solution and it would be the start of £1,000's spend before actually finding the problem. Please can anyone help, it seems to be problem caused before amongst other readers and surely someone has eventually had the problem solved first time from a credible mechanic??? Read more
