I have a classic car which I use infrequently and an every day car, A Focus, both are insured fully comp, the classic car has my full no claims bonus on it and the Focus has zero, because only one car can have the NCB.
My classic car was my every day car until last year when I got the Focus, but kept the insurance going on the classic complete with NCB. Both cars are insured with the same company who gave a small discount for insuring both cars.
At the time a friend said I should transfer the NCB to the Focus.
Is there any point to this? If I were to have a claim on the Focus, would the NCB be reduced, even though it's on the classic? Or would the NCB not be affected, it all seems confusing can anyone help?!
Bottom line - should I transfer the NCB onto the Focus?
One other question - would the Focus start to earn its own NCB on the next renewal? Read more
Hi guys,
I haven't had my own car insurance for 18 months now but have been a named driver on the wife's car... (nothing sneaky, I didn't need a car for work so it was the most sensible option)...
I am now about to get a car and insure it again so I would like to know if my no claims bonus from 18 months ago will still be valid?
Thanks Read more
Acceptance of old NCB is down the the new insurer. I've seen as short as 6 months quoted, up to a couple of years.
The easiest would be to consider going back to your previous insurer.
Had to abort a trip to Sussex last Sunday at Roehampton Vale, where I became very aware of a dragging brake. In the petrol station there, the o/s front wheel was nearly too hot to touch. The AA sent a local proxy with a get-you-home truck which got us back here. On Monday took the car to my fine Aussie indy near here.
He said the o/s disc had taken some punishment and anyway had corrosion on the inside braking surface. They weren't exactly free and neither were the pads. Twice what they would have cost for the Escort or more. When fitting the pads he found the cause of the binding that had stopped us: corrosion, he thought, as a result of the brake fluid not having been changed, causing the piston to stick. The resulting heat would (in my own opinion) have exacerbated the dragging. So, a new caliper too. I had hoped the problem was just seized guide pins, but no such luck.
Exchange caliper retails for £145. My man charged me two thirds of that, passing on his own discount to me. He charged 50 quid for labour, too little really. He's a jewel. But it still cost a whisker over 300 quid, and being a patriot to the bone I am pretty skint right now. Read more
Yep i've replaced seals on dozens of brake and hydraulic clutch systems over the years, including master cylinders though never tackled stripping an ABS unit nor likely too.
Never had a problem afterwards, but found much gunk mud and bulletts floating around in filthy sometimes rusty (water) muck once known as brake fluid.
I wonder if lack of maintenace led to accelerated wear on hydraulic seals etc, unadjusted drum brakes pistons having to travel their whole length in the slave cylinder, much longer travel on the master cylinder too must have taken their toll quite apart from filthy muck being pushed through the system causing increased wear.
I imagine getting repair/overhaul kits for vehicles not being as easy as it once was.
Only 2 bottles of Brut this weekend then Lud..;)

A loss of 900 lower paid jobs and a gain of 400 well paid very
highly skilled jobs its not so much bad news.
I see your point, but that's still a lot of people who will now be struggling to pay mortgages, they weren't working there for pocket money! The 900 people working in the lower paid contact centre jobs actually do quite well financially for what they do and they may struggle to replace that lost income (advisors in my current office earn about £18K for answering the phone)
The problem these staff have is that they are skilled up for contact centre work, not for production line work, they will find it quite difficult to find alternative employment. My centre is hiring now but we will only soak up a fraction of the laid off staff. Other centres are still "off-shoring" their work, fortunately my industry has tried in the past and it was a miserable failure. :-)
Sorry I know that the link to the Nissan factory is tenuous but I feel close enough to this issue personally to want to comment on it! :-)

A BUSINESSMAN has been fined by cops for blowing his nose in a car.
Dad-of-two Michael Mancini pulled out a tissue while he was stuck in stationary traffic - with his handbrake on.
But he was given a £60 fixed penalty notice for "not being in control of his vehicle".
I bet you somewhere in Strathclyde Police Head Office there is someone scratching their head wondering how to reply to this! Read more
I'd also like to see Westpig et al make a comment on this case just
to get the 'other side'. It really does defy common sense and I can't begin
to imagine why the police officer concerned thought that issuing the NIP was a good
move.
100% agree....and so would most of my colleagues. This sort of thing does untold damage and ruins the hard earnt respect achieved by others.
Hi
I bought a Mazda 3 recently and have only had it for one month.
Its a 2 litre Sport and so does go thruugh a lot of fuel, but i noticed that the petrol gage wasnt going up when i put petrol in and it was using it far more quickly that it usually would.
So on a journey home, i was keeping an eye on the petrol when i noticed that the mileage gage seemed to be creeping up too quickly. I timed and measure the distance and its showing 1 mile for every half mile!
I continued to measure this when i reached the A road near my house and it continued increasing at the same speed!
Are the two issues linked ? should i take it back to the dealer?
Thanks

Nikki,
One thing has come to mind. The vehicle may well be an import - so check the handbook for the selling dealer. If its continental you may well have the correct odomenter fited running in Km's. Failing that you could try your local Mazda dealer - they should be able to establish if its an import. I do find it hard to unerstand that (assuming its digital) that it can't simply be switched. It may even be in the handbook!!
Hope this helps

So they really did weather the downturn better than GM. I know they sold JLR, Aston Martin and now Volvo. And have some good new cars on the way. Read more
Great, Ford in profit again.
Does this mean they'll start painting the cars properly now? ;-P
This morning on BBC news they had a guy on discussing rising cost of Car Insurance. What i found interesting was what he said about uninsured drivers. He reckoned about 100.000 unisured drivers and stopped and their cars confiscated destroyed or whatever. This was possible through the introduction of the APNR system. remember on another thread we discussed this and i said i thought it was working. Well if this guys figures are correct 100.000 really isnt a lot don't you think, for the amount of drivers on the road what do you reckon. So where i thought APNR was effective it maybe is not as effective as it should be.
Regarding Expensive insurance i have managed to keep increases to a minimum by shopping around using all the usual means available. How is your insurance quote are you managing to keep it sensible.
This guy by the way was blaming unisured drivers, people who don't bother to get insured , i think he said something like 1 in 20 not insured. Read more
People just can't be bothered to take things further these days,
Might this be because (a) many people can afford the cost of moderate repairs (b) they reckon it may cost them more to employ lawyers and other costly support (c) it may just be more hassle than it's worth?
Yesterday watching the news and the release of all the info that says where out of recession. An economist was saying all the things put in place, quantative easing, bank of England low interest rates, reduced VAT. Then he said the car scrappage scheme. In the next statement they talked about manufacturing and how the scrappage scheme had pushed these figures up.
I don't want to sound pontificating BR's but i and along with Mike Rutherford and many others have said it many times before. The motorists of this country contribute through the taxes they pay about £50 billion a year. Is it us motorists who now keep the country running through the taxes we pay. Read more
Perhaps I should say that I'm sure, if they tried, the Gov could come up with schemes that would benefit this country more for the same outlay than this mess of a scheme...
Recently bought megane RT Sport 1.6, have since had a smell of fumes inside car. Doesn't really go even after driving for a while.
Any help greatly appreciated.

' normally comes once the car has warmed up '
Suspect it will be your heater matrix leaking slightly, this then evapourates when the heater gets hot giving the smell.
Try some Radseal or similar added to your radiator.
Admiral applied my NCB to both cars of a multicar policy where I was sole named driver.
