A well known comedian stopped by the police for talking into his mobile phone has got off as his lawyer said the phone was being used as a recording device to record a joke. He often did this as he would forget the gag otherwise. Under current legislation this is not an offence. There we are then, the dangerous so and so's who use their phone at the wheel have a ready made get out route.

Just like the pratt in the Cayenne turbo that pulled out of the Belfrey last week and followed me to Bassets Pole with his phone held to his ear . . . . can't have been that a hands free kit was too expensive for him. >>

Oh dear, you've misunderstood.

What you saw in your rear view mirror was a talented and wealthy comedian dictating the jokes for his next gig.

Bit unusual to be posting this as a seller (it?s normally people on the other side saying how they?ve been had), but I?m hoping you guys will give me some impartial advice.

Recently sold a car to a trader (after owning it a month) which had a speedo fault. Had the speedo changed but didn?t get the mileage corrected as it wasn?t THAT far off the correct mileage. (yes I know I should have...)

The new owner has called me to say he has contacted the previous owner and has realised the mileage isn?t correct. The car was sold under market value with a known fault which was declared to the buyer.

I?ve offered to take the car back and give him a full refund. But he is suggesting he would prefer a cash settlement as he is already having the work that needed doing already carried out. If I was to take the car back I would have to pay for all the work, which seems to be more expensive than the quote I had. Personally I don?t believe he is having the work carried out. I can?t really follow it up as it?s being done by a ?mate?.

What options do I have? Only suggestion I can think of is that I get him to sign a letter stating he is aware that the mileage is not accurate/ correct and has bought the car knowing this. But will this stand for anything legally? I?m worried that if he finds a fault with the car he will kick up a fuss again or threaten me with other legalities? Not done much car buying or selling so just want as little hassle as possible...

I?m willing to correct my mistake but would like to cover myself. Although ideally I?d like the car back so that I can correct the mileage and resell it.

You'd soon be jumping up and down about it ...

Not about the marginal mileage difference in this case. I might be wondering what other things had been 'covered up'. On the other hand, the buyer seems to have started spending time/money on the car, which implies he is/was happy with the sale. I still think he is pushing luck a bit.

Romford/Rainham are in Essex?

True, but they are still in LONDON Borough of Chavering....sorry....Havering. Barking is also in Essex but you couldn't compare it with the bucolic splendour of.....say......Finchingfield.

hi eveyone.
could anyone please help? my dti was running fine untill i decided to change the fuel filter. Since then then ive had trouble everyday starting, mainly after its been standing for longer than 5 hrs or so.

I have changed the fuel filter housing thinking i may of damaged it, but no change. there is deisel spraying out of all injectors once its started and it runs great then. ive also cleaned the EGR vave and another sensor in the manifold which were badly oiled up but still no change.

I have read that it could be something as simple as the spill pipes which could need replacing or more costly, the injector seals.

Ive also heard of people putting a non return valve in the system, as i believe im drawing air in but i dont know from where. could this be a simple cure? if so, would you put the valve? On the crimped fuel pipes before the filter or between the filter and the pump?I would rather try the simple cheaper solutions first myself before going to the dealers

It was a 2minute job to change the fuel filter but now I wish i never touched it!!

Any advice is hugely appreciated!!!!

Many Thanks

I saw a very nicely preserved Mk1 3.0L GTXL a couple of weekends ago. Bright yellow, Black vinyl roof. I think the car can still stand against todays Eurobox variety and hold its head up high in the looks stakes. I just don't think it dates. If they produced one today (but rust free and better dynamics etc) I'd buy one!

The Mk3 is quite a looker too.

Anyone else? Read more

You're right Lud - I doubt whether many of the FWD jocks here would have the stomach for one.

Sitting in the waiting area of one of my local garages the other day, I picked up one of their trade magazines to pass the time while I waited. There was an item in one where one of the national suppliers to the trade were offering a full 30,000 mile warranty on their replacement timing belt kits, including full parts and labour on all collateral engine damage caused by a failure.

I'm blessed if I can remember the companies name, but someone in the trade might be able to help out with that. It would be worth checking with your local garage to see if they offer it at belt replacement time, as generally only the belt itself is covered leaving the customer to pick up the tab for the wrecked engine.

Question about tyres for my pals Rav4 D4D (swb /3 door).
The original Toyo tyres have worn, and she was unable to get 3 more to match the unused spare. Our local reputable & trusted tyre depot have fitted the unused Toyo spare, together with 3 new Federal's. The mix is on the rear axle.
In my inexpert opinion, if Toyos are not available to properly match the spare, then it should remain there and she should get 4 new matching tyres.
I know a lot of people do this, but I don't advocate mixing tyres on the car and certainly not on the same axle, as I would not want to mix their differing characteristics, let alone with difs, abs and traction control that the RAV4 will have.
I have suggested that she checks this out with her handbook and local Toyota dealer.

What do you think of mixed tyres on a RAV4?
Thanks for any help. Read more

The problem with japanese vehicles is the tyre fitted is not alaways available in the uk the same tyre design etc.

Having said that all 4x tyres can be different and it should drive just fine im sure they don't take this off road they usually leave that to a good old landrover for that!

It's best to use the spare because that tyre will be as old and needs to be used to get max wear from the tyre before the sidewall cracks due to age.

wypte-bus-preservation

Hi,

Wonder if someone can assist me. I currently have a 51 plate Renault Scenic with 1.9 dTi engine. It has what I believe is a problem with the fuel pump or system, and so is a bad starter.

The car itself I like (much moreso that the 2003 onwards shape scenic that I have test driven and even more than current or previous Espace models) as I find it very comfortable to sit in and believe it has a good driving position, and I've had this idea that if I'm going to spend £500 on a new fuel pump (which may or may not cure the fault) there is an argument for saying why don't I spend an amount on a new engine (I wish to stick with diesel).

FIRST QUESTION - would the Renault common rail diesel engine fit in my car (in terms of compatibility with other systems, electrics etc) simply?

SECOND QUESTION - if I fancied something completely different, would a larger diesel engine (example the Peugeot 2.2 hDi engine) be possible to fit? I'm aware that there would be a high degree of rewiring needed and doubtless other issues too - I guess my question is whether it would physically fit?

Or should I just get rid of my Scenic and buy something else (MPV recommendations gratefully received - preferably a diesel that isn't too sluggish, and that doesn't have a centrally mounted speedometer).

Thanks in anticipation

nobody in the west yorkshire bus preservation society can help you?
im shocked
surely some member can give you a pointer to your problems
i wouldnt fancy swapping an engine over in a renault though for a different type as renault themselves cant get their wiring looms right on a good monday afternoon
(i seriously believe they put problem looms in right hand drive cars as they dont seem to have as much issues on the continent, unless someone knows better)

My insurance is up for renewal next week. Last year when I got it Directline were doing 0% APR but now its 23% APR.

My credit card has 11% APR so surely it would be cheaper to pay my premium on my credit card or am I missing something obvious?

My premium is around £800 a year fully comp with £250 excess.

I've worked out that by using my credit card it would be around £80 a year cheaper but it seems too easy? I can't afford to pay it on go as it would take up all my money and there will be no money for those expensive emergencies. Read more
