Hi
I have a toyota camry that runs on LPG. I understand that it runs hotter than usual. Would an oil cooler make any difference? Can you recommend any websites that let me know how I can buy one with advice on these devices.

I understand that they are more suited to cars that tow as the gear box oil gets hotter in these cases!

Thanks

The LPG high temp usually only will create issues when stuck in a small traffic jam.
Best thing to do is switch it to idle on petrol in these conditions and then switch back to LPG when moving again.

I have an XK8 on LPG and although it does have an oil cooler, I always switch over when in a small jam.

I was lolling on the sofa a few minutes ago, just after lunch and mentally flipping a marble (as you do)
Well.. we did actually. At least me and my mate, but if one went over the side of the canvas cot then rat a tat tat, on the wooden floor you were in for it.

It was during one of those infant enforced sleep intervals that I looked out of the big round window in Rothwell school and considered the inter-connectivity of roads.

Other kids were asleep in the summer heat of 1952 and I was flipping the marble. The next class up were going through the alphabet. ABCD... through the thin partition to the next classroom - almost as though timed to perfection to learn before entry during our nap.

It started with the wires - telephone wires and the pole straight outside the window, visible over the cot side and the gleam of the marble - in the minds eye the glass eye of a tiger and currency in rare colour in the pre money world of friends now sleeping - mouths open, lingering like puppies in the last refuge to complete relaxation and total lunchtime refreshment until the current post retirement day.

Connected. Roads. Not just wires and for the first time the mind raced ahead - down roads beyond actually travelled, in the Aunts old sit up and beg Austin with its slow plod plod to Bridlington and the wind chapped legs of an East Coast Summer.

Thanks for your help, I'd done a search earlier and found that the resistors are useless and the mod seems easy.

Hi,
I have a mondeo 2.0 TDCi LX. In the last few days it has started to splutter and jump when I accelerate sharply. At the same time their is a sound of sucking air. This seems to happen just above 2000 revs.
This morning their was a cloud of blue smoke when I first stated the car up. It runs relatively smoothly when accelerating gently.

any ideas out there, any help would be much appreciated.

I had the same probs. ie Lack of power, Smoking, Hissing sound on acceleration and poor fuel economy from 46 MPG down to 34MPG.
The turbow hose was the prob, situated front ofside on engine close to the radiator.
The hose is £34 from Fords and is Apprx 2" diameter and 15" long and runs from the Exhaulst emissins regulater which is attached to the upper engine on the drivers side (right hand drive)which could couse the same problem but costs £126 exchange from Fords.
So you will check the hose first. good luck.Ron

I had thought that Mrs H was coping with mid-life stuff very well until a run of rough night shifts in the midwifery unit immediately after our holiday, and a simultaneous visit from her unemployed brother and his idle wife made her unusually irritable at the weekend. I paraphrase our conversation as follows;

Mrs H, " I want a new car, my C3's nearly 10 years old now."
H, seated, browsing this very site, "It's actually just 7 years old. Anything in mind, my dear?"
Mrs H, "Something that turns heads." Pause. "In red; bright red."
H, looking at the rolling Citroen advert and pointing at the pics of the C3 Picasso, "That would turn a few heads. Especially in bright red. Honest John himself thinks very highly of it."
Mrs H grabs the magnifying glass and peers at the ad for a second or two. She then mimes sticking her fingers down her throat and narrows her eyes, "It's hideous. I didn't mean that sort of head-turning. I can't believe you'd even consider buying me something that horribly ugly. Listen to me, I want a SPORTS car. I've done the family car thing to death. I don't need 4 doors. And get over this ridiculous obsession you have with Citroens. I want a sports car that's not a Citroen; and that's bright red; and that turns heads. And that goes a bit."
H, after 19 Citroens, drawing on his limited experience of other marques, "How about a little Mercedes coupe? In red of course."
Mrs H mimes tearing her hair out. "You're just not getting this are you? Your MOTHER had a Mercedes. And John (my stepfather). And Louise (one of her more mature therapy clients). Forget Mercedes. You've got your motorcycle; I want a head-turning, red sports car that's not a Citroen or a Mercedes that I can overtake with. I've nearly forgotten what it's like to overtake other cars. How difficult can that be?"
She disappears only to return a second later, "And don't be looking at any posey BMWs either."

So I'm turning to you lot for help. Allemagne null points. Budget about £8k with the maybe £2k we'd get for her '02 diesel C3. Suggestions outside the box welcome.

Mrs H and I have had a couple of long looks at netcarshow.com to try and pick something head-turning. MX-5, S2000, Toyota Celica and Alfa Brera are under consideration.

Yesterday we went to pick up the C3 from the local indie who had just given it an MoT. Outside was a bright red MGB GT with Rostyle wheels and plastic bumpers, with a nice fresh MoT on the passenger seat. It was priced at £2495.

Now I have a history of bad experiences with all things BMC/BLMC/Leyland and I was cringing as Mrs H cooed over the gleaming beast. Nightmarish visions of trying to locate my AF sockets, my timing strobe, my Colourtune kit and my carb balancers shut me up for a few minutes. I was saved by Mrs H asking if it had aircon. Phew! That's that one off the list.

Incidentally Mr indie had some very rude things to say about Alfas; I thought they were a reasonable proposition by now but apparently not. Buy Japanese for your toy car or not at all he said; the C3's got years of life left in it.

Hi, can anyone give me any ideas what the problem could be, our grand voyager is completely dead. The fob will not open the car and when you try to start it nothing happens. the immobiliser light on the dashboard is not illuminated, we initially thought the battery may be dead but have tried jump starting it from another car but still not a flicker of life.
can anyone give any ideas what to try.
many thanks Read more

Need a bit of advice here.
Neighbour who lives directly across the street from me - despite having a drive capable of safely parking 4 cars - chooses to park in the street.
Street is pretty narrow - typical housing estate set up.
By going so - getting out my drive involves quite an effort despite the fact it's only a small Peugeot 205.
Weekends are a different matter altogether.
Because I race or practice on the scrambler - getting the van out the drive is a complete nightmare - often taking a good 10 minutes of forward/reverse turning. Again the van is not the biggest - a Vito.
Often I leave early in the morning - noise would certainly annoy me if trying to sleep.
Despite constantly asking the neighbour to show some consideration - he'll move the car when asked but early in the morning - I would be wasting my time to knock/ask.
Question being - the van is fitted with a tow bar and no rear windows. I must be getting very close to clipping his car.
From my understanding - it's illegal to block of someone's driveway and incidents are often seen as knock for knock and that's as far as it goes.
Basically with the darker mornings approaching - it's only a matter of time!
Any advice/help would be appreciated Read more

For the continued discussion of all things pertaining to motoring jokes.

This is Volume 6, Volume 5 is closed.

There is no need to repeat anything since earlier volumes will not be deleted.

Anything over the line will get deleted without reference to you; too much of it and the entire thread will simply go.

The others linger on somewhere on the site, if your that desperate you can search for them using forum search.

Anything that has an "ist" when describing it will be binned, motoring link also a requirement.

Toyota have announced that they will be taking part in Formula 1 this year after all.

They reckon they'll be unstoppable.

Hi,

My car was hit from the back (other party has addmitted responsibility) and was declared a total loss. My insurance company is ready to pay me the market value (deducting the salvage costs), but refuses to sell me back my car.

The irony is that the damage is quicte negligible and the car is perfectly drivable. Furthermore, the car is now in my posession (I have recovered it from their workshop).

Is there any way I can "persuade" them to sell me my car back?

Many thanks for yor answers. Read more

Yes, it's just the boot door and the boot back wall that were deformed. The garage estimate listed only those as replacements. No floor repairs.

Mine is just a load of boring questions:

Why was is it made illegal to drive without wearing a seat belt?

A. Perhaps to reduce serious injury thereby save public money spent through NHS on accidents?

Why are bikers not penalised for riding around wearing just jeans and a t shirt in the summer?

A. Please tell me.

I am a biker myself and would not leave home without leathers etc. I have seen the results from friends who did not.

Might I suggest a new catagory here - 'Road Safety'?

regards to all.

British riders are *generally* good at using suitable gear for motorcycling - I've not been to any country where I've been more impressed at the general use of decent safety-wear.

It would be hard to legislate - there are always changes in this area.
It's possible to buy Kevlar-reinforced jeans for motorcycling.

Most men know what happens if they come off their bike wearing shorts, just as we've seen 'plum damage' on fuel tanks. This is a big deterrent against complacency !
