The fans on my wifes Golf are cutting in sporadically at all times when the temperature is normal. Are both fans water cooling fans? I am summising that there is a problem with a temperature switch...any help gratefully received.

With the a/c turned on ,both cooling fans should run slow speed .There could be a fault with the slow speed fan circuit,in which case the fans will run sporadically at high speed. Both fans are for water and a/c rad cooling .hth

Thanks for the reply, how would I nail this down? Start up with the A/C turned off? And where on the slow speed fan circuit would the fault be - if theres a particular achilles heel.

Very much depends on what the engine temp is.Starting from cold with a/c off, then no fans should run.Run engine to operating temp (a/c off) when temp gauge reaches just over 1/2 way,the slow speed (both fans)should run.Very common for the fan motors to fail on these .They are both 2 speed but not the same power rating.hth

The slow speed resistors which are stupidly incorporated within the motors, have failed. Do a search and you will find many references to this problem and a work-around using external resistors mounted on a heatsink.
Do not run this vehicle with deficient cooling fans.

Thanks for your help, I'd done a search earlier and found that the resistors are useless and the mod seems easy.
