i am considering spending around 34k on a 1 year old bmw 330d m sport conv with all the extras and low mileage from a bmw dealer but wanted to ask your advice on how much they may be willing to negotiate on price ? i am a cash buyer ready to go as I have already sold my existing car and the entire money is in the bank, hence no part-ex. difficult to know how much lower to go in to start with and also as they are a top notch bmw dealer, will they negotiate at all ? what do you suggest ? and experiences or tips ? thanks Read more

Depends on the model and how much in demand they are. I only managed to get £500 of my 335d but that's because they rarely appear on the market and they have lots of buyers for them when they do surface.

Focus1.8TDCi

I've always wanted one of these cars, since 10 years ago. I've seen a 1998 523i SE, 120k miles, 170bhp, manual, for £2000. Seems in good conidtion from photo, looks really good in machine silver. Advert says it has black leather but no photos. Personally I prefer fabric seats unless on a very expensive car. I'm worried a car of that age will have saggy leather.
I do very few miles and considering selling my 2002 focus 1.8 tdci ghia, 117k miles. Its a brilliant car and I've always said if I were to buy a new one, it would have to have superior handling, ride and comfort, so no astras, golfs etc. I reckon I can get £2.5k for my car privately, is that reaslistic?

Is the BMW 523i 170bhp a good car/engine and is it a good price at £2000 or should I haggle? Finally, apart from running costs, is the BMW superior in every way to drive and be a passenger in? Or should I just keep the focus? Read more

Excellent advice, GB.

The latest generation of BMWs also benefit from all the fancy electronics. My driving skills are below average (which is not false modesty on my part), and whenever I've got into a little bit of trouble, some lights on the dashboard come on to indicate that the electronics have taken over, and the car rights itself.

The one exception to this is snow and ice. Last winter we had snow for a week and the drive to work was a "Senna" experience. (Not so much "Ayrton Senna", more like "Senna Pods")

I recently purchased a Morris Minor as a 'fun' car. It's a 1098cc engine of, I think 1960 vintage.

Which oil should i use in the engine? Presumably the engine is using 'old' technology, so the latest fully synthetic oils would be inappropriate?

Would a straight 20-50 oil be best? Are there any spec numbers I should be looking for?

Is it worth paying the extra for Castrol or Duckhams, say? Would Asda's cheapest be OK? Read more

It's all about oil flow

My Austin A35 workshop manual states that the minimum idle pressure should be 15psi and normal running pressure (4000 rpm) is at 60psi...

Hiya folks

I need to change the address on my driving license. The only problem is that its been one of those 'things' that I've been putting off for a while now and should have been done a few years ago. I have checked out the directgov website which allows you to apply for a change of address online and I have all the applicable details (digital passport, etc).

My only issue is the bit where it says you need to:

provide addresses of where you have lived over the last three years

Well, heh, the address I live at now (ie. the address I want to change my license to) is the same as the address I have been living at for the last 3 years! Now, am I just being paranoid, but is this something that the DVLA will pick up on and get tough about? For instance "why did you not inform us earlier" followed by a juicy and expensive fine. Should I use my old address instead? ( I don't think this is a good idea....)

Just wondered if anyone thinks there is anything to worry about or whether anyone has had any similar things happen..... Yeah, I should have sorted this out a while back but it has never caused issues and just got plonked at the bottom of a very long list entitled 'things to do.'

Cheers - futurebob Read more

Daily? How many visits does it take, then? - Actually, none, as has been pointed out.

Hi.
I got 2005 Ford Focus MK2 1.6 TDCI,93000 miles done.
When the engine is warm and at speeds exceeding 50 miles, sometimes I get light blue smoke coming form the exhaust, but only if I take my foot off the accelerator. Then if I put the accelerator again, the smoke disapears. It is not happening every day.

1.Valve stem oil seals-NO-it is opposite situation.
2.Emission test done-OK.
3.Had it on the computer as well and nothing came up,except some turbo faults.
4.Turbo has been changed at 80 thousand miles.
5.Injectors tested-OK.
6.No warning lights on the dashboard.

Hi

Please can someone help? I got flashed twice whilst in Germany recently. Just received the first letter, all in German, asking me to confirm that I was driving, who the passanger was etc. There are photographs to prove it was me. I was in a hire car from Hertz. I am a bit worried about it as I go to Germany at least once a year. This is the first time I have had the misfortune to get a speeding ticket (twice in 24 hrs). They are a bit underhanded as they hide them and give no warning. Not like the UK where you have a good chance to slow down with signs to warn you. snipand of course it has nothing to do with road safety, its all about extracting money from motorists.
The 2 fines will amount to about 300 euros. I don't intend to pay if I can get away with it. What are the likely consequences??

Thanks

Personally I have not seen a request for driver AND passenger details as the OP
indicates.

You are right, all the ones I've had from the German police have only asked for identification of the driver. Astonishingly good quality photos though.

On holiday in Spain last week and luckily we had pre-hired a car. I had booked a Pug Partner on the basis that it was cheap, roomy, and a car I was genuinely interested in trying. At the airport we were upgraded to a brand new Renault Scenic 1.5DCi (400km on the clock). Over the next 10 days we did another 700km. Then this week our C8 was in for a service, and instead of the usual C3 I got a C4 Grand Picasso 1.6 HDI manual (8,000 miles on the clock). A chance to drive two competing cars within days of each other. So, how do they compare?

EXTERIOR
To me the new Scenic is just too bland and a retrograde step compared to the previous model. This seems to be a common theme in Renault's styling department at the moment. The Grand Pic is a far more adventurous design to my eyes, although maybe a bit bulbous around the front? Beauty is in the eye of the beholder.

INTERIOR
The Scenic has a smart TFT display screen that is just slightly easier to read than the Grand Pic's conventional digital display, but the rest of the interior is a complete victory for the Citroen. Better quality materials, more room around the pedals, and really clever seats that all fold flat, with a flat load-lip, making the transfer of a washing machine last night a complete doddle. The Renaults rear seats fold just like a conventional hatchback, leaving an uneven floor (although they can be taken out altogether) and the boot has a noticeable load-lip. The huge windscreen on the Picasso is great, really brightening up the cabin. The seats on the Picasso are also better. Both had stacks of room in the rear but the Citroen was roomier and I could fit in all seats (all 6'1" of me).

ON THE ROAD
The two cars are very similar as far as road-holding and suspension are concerned - but the Citroen has a slight edge on comfort. Both had electronic hand-brakes. The Citroens was a bit slow in operation but the car had a hill-hold which would seem to be essential with hand-brakes like this. If the Renault had a hill-hold, it wasn't working on our car, making hill starts very difficult.

The PSA 1.6HDI has a slight power advantage over the Renault 1.5DCi, and this really showed on the road where it goes very well, despite the larger body of the Citroen. I've driven this PSA/Ford 1.6 HDI in other cars and it is a great engine. A major fault with the Renault was the way it would bog down in 2nd gear at, say 10mph when you turn into a side road. It just couldn't pick up in 2nd and you would be forced to drop down to 1st uncomfortably. The Citroen can pull away in 1st with no throttle in the way that all good diesels can. The Renault needs revs to pull away, making town driving more of a chore - I stalled it more than once!

Brakes clutch and steering on both were similar, both had light, feel-free steering in the modern style - perfectly acceptable for the type of car, although doubtless some road testers would moan about them.

VERDICT
The Citroen would win all day long for me, which must be a bit of a disappointment for the head honchos back at Renault HQ. It is almost as if they hadn't even looked at the Picasso when designing the new Scenic.

My C4 GP VTR+ copes well on steep hills, 4 grown ups will see 55mph by the time you get to the top of the steep Telegraph Hill going to the English Riviera in Devon.
What you have to remember these are 16v motors not a basic 1.6ltr. No doubt a 2.0ltr would be best with 138bhp but then you'd lose the excellent mpg you get with the 1.6 16v.

Mine is due for replacement next year, waiting to see what the new Pug version is going to show for itself otherwise another C4 GP. My only real dislike, is the harsh ride at the rear over pot holes and alike as it tends to hop side ways as if the dampers are not stiff enough.
Maybe the rear air suspension on the Exclusive model maybe be better. ??

Have read threads about fuel consumption on 2.0 Mondeo Diesels affected by DPF. Can anyone quote comparitive figures for a Citroen Xsara Picasso 1.6 (110bhp) with and without DPF (Citroen call it FAP). Any other problems with picasso's with DPF.? I am experiencing a 10% increase in fuel with my newest XPic. Neither the dealer or Citroen will investegate, and carry out proper tests to see if the problem lies in tolerance stacking or was i mis-sold this car as i was never advised about the effects of DPF on fuel consumption. didnt the picasso change circa 2006 so your driving a different shape vehicle? If thats the case factor in wind resistance, extra weight, different ecu programming etc etc.

hi all, my key fob as stopped working due to the fact that my heater controls are on a perminent live, when i get out i have to turn my heaters off else my battery goes flat.

The other night i forgot, i was late for work and was in a rush. when i came out to go home i could not unlock my doors with the key fob - not enough power in the battery i think, i eventually got my door lock to open, it was a bit stiff to open due to the fact they never get used, anyway i got the car running. When i got home i went to lock it with the key fob and nothing is happening.

is it just coincidence the battery as gone in my remote or do i need to get it re-coded?

never experienced this before, thanks glyn..........

{I think you mean key fob, instead of key thobe? Also added some punctuation and broke up some of the sentences to make for easier reading} Read more

Insert the key in the ignition. Turn the key to the on position. Hold the unlock button down for approx 15 seconds. You should hear a click which means your car has now recognised the key fob. As I've had the same problem with my Peugeot 406 and the Picasso uses the same system I know it works.

Hope this helps

Leading on from long term caretaking of new Octavia, would it be worthwhile running the car on this? It is the 1.9 105bhp PD engine, used it before on old Mondy never saw any difference, but would have needed a strip down to see if any cleaner inside. As all manufacurers, VAG do not recommend any fuel additives, but Millers is well respected in diesel circles. I normally use Shell fuel, and this would work out cheaper than their premium diesel. Or is it snake oil? I don't mind spending a little more if it helps the longevity of the car. I take it helps to lubricate fuel system, and keeps it clean(er). It's so new not on Millers site yet LOL's but saw it here first. Read more

"i can get a bargain bulk buy on"

I can remember having a 5 gallon drum of Castrol XL, GB. That`s a while ago...;-)

Probably got through it in a year doing 1,000 mile changes - but can`t remember what on.
