First this year we had Autodex, the UK’s fifth largest independent bodyshop group
now Wilcox Motor Bodies
These were both big repair facilities,i blame the banks, insurance companies insisting on very expensive pas 125 and the general downturn
Be warned your favourite bodyshop may be next
My recommended local independant man has just about now walked away from his insurance supplier due to all the new rules and expensive paper chase
lets put it this way you weld a wing on and you have to log the time you left the power on and at what wattage and who did the actual welding, can you imagine in a busy bodyshop having to deal with that every time you pick a tool up or have to refer to a diagram on how to remove a bumper when you know there is a better way. Turnover at the Just Car Clinic, the quoted car repair firm, fell down 4 per cent in the first four months of this year

they say market demand was held back by reduced road usage and higher insurance excesses.

chairman David Hickey, said: "Conditions during 2009 have been challenging with underlying market repair volumes being adversely affected by the economic recession.---------------

I changed the pads and discs on the S60 at the last service. After about 1500 miles on the new discs, I started to get an intermittent shake on the steering when braking from speed. This can be quite violent at times, yet other times (this morning for example) I braked from 70 mph on a slip road and the wheel remained completely undisturbed.

This is also accompanied sometimes by what I can only describe as a "pulsed" braking effect, most noticeable when braking gently at very slow speeds (i.e. <10 mph). There is no wobble or pulse through the pedal, but the braking effort seems to get stronger and weaker a couple of times a second, the frequency slowing down with road speed.

The brakes themselves seem otherwise normal in their effort, and in terms of things like pedal travel and feel. Driving to work this morning, there seemed to be nothing wrong at all, yet I could brake from motorway speeds tonight and almost have the wheel taken out of my hands. It really seems intermittent and random.

Car has done 144,000 miles, and doesn't seem to have any other symptoms. The 6,000 mile old front tyres are wearing evenly, and there's no noise from the front suspension that I am aware of. MOT was done in January (6k ago) and no advisories or issues with brakes or suspension noted.

Any suggestions?

Cheers

Just out of interest DP, i've noticed that some firms selling front pads for the S60 ask you if the car has 15/16" or 17" wheels and sell different pads for these sizes but Volvo genuine pads just say one size fits all from 2000 onwards, i'm confused.

I've registered with this site ' www.citroenpicasso.org.uk/ '

I can logon, and read all the Topics. But cannot place a Topic or Contact any of the Mods to ask them Why I get an error message, even certain areas of my Controls I can't access, without it saying 'I don't have permission' to enter.

Has anyone used it or maybe know why I can't access etc.

thanks

edited, as the quotes you put at each end of the link prevented it from working at all Read more

I think they must be having some (temporary?) problems - I created an account there a few months ago to access their forums, and what I needed was "pinned" in the technical FAQ, so I never needed to post.

I just tried logging in now and got the errors you describe. And even though I appear to be logged in, I can't create a new post.

The "contact the administrator" link gives this email address:

If you've got a Picasso, it's probably worth persevering with that site - there's a lot of useful information there, and the Picasso is a complicated beast.

hi

any ideas please

i have a 1998 galaxy 2.0 and for the last few weeks it has been jumping out of gear, then 2 days ago it was very hard to get into gear and i had to keep puhing the clutch to get it to go. then yesterday the clutch was sort of airy fairy and went to the floor in a puff of air, from then on i could not get into any gear at all - when i turned the engine off, it went through the gears no problem, but engine on nothing - my neighbour said its the clutch slave cylinder and stuff about air bleeding, so i bout one and he changed it for me today, but nothing is different, he said he has had 3 attempts at bleeding the air, but its still exactly the same.

please point me in the right direction Read more

Is it moving the clutch arm? if so could be a mechanical problem with the clutch itself. If it is a problem with air, the only guaranted way of removing it all is to attach a tube to the slave cylinder bleed screw and force fluid back up to the master cylinder. It could of course be the master cylinder that's faulty.

Hello,

My Dad's car wouldn't start and so he asked a family friend to have a look at it - he advised that the starting motor could be the cause of the problem so my Dad has replaced it. It still doesn't start - nothing happens when the key is turned except the first time after the motor was replaced, there was a click. That's it.

We did notice the old motor had 10-teeth compared to the 9-teeth on the new one but we spoke to Bosch who advised this should be ok.

We have very few symptoms to work with so I was lookign for some advice about diagnosis of the issue. Read more

A fully charged 12v car battery will only ever show a maximum of 12.7v whilst
at rest and around 12.06v at 50% capacity.

A battery can show full voltage and not have the power to turn a starter,a no load test on a circuit means nothing, especially with a digital meter. As the OP asked someone else to look at it,who had a guess at the starter motor,I doubt they have the technical competence(no offence) or equipment to be testing voltage drops etc..Hence the suggestion to get someone in who knows what they are doing.

Picture the scene, 8am thismorning i'm delivering a couple of cars to a garage i haven't been to before.

Seaside town, garage on fairly busy road and the del instructions say to back into road beside garage to unload.

About 50 yards down the side road terraced houses start, so my back end is where the houses begin.

Now i am a considerate chap and try to make as little noise as possible and try not to inconvenience residents.
I pride meself on being quiet as possible, its always possible some poor souls are trying to get some kip, night or late workers etc, quite apart from keeping noise down anyway.

So i've gently performed, and just as i'm putting the gear away, young woman comes out of side road in car and gives big blast of her very loud hooter as a goodbye to someone else (bet she's a lovely thing when she's had 8 pints on a friday night...yuk)

I know we have to live with arrogant air-headed thoughtless fools, and its getting worse, but i might just as well have slammed everything around and made as much racket as i could.

What is all this hooting lark, and why are people so inconsiderate to others peace when they are in a car. Read more

>>> When my kids were younger, we had a family opposite of Meditarranean origin. <<

Mediterranean's are naturally noisy, they don't mean any harm its just the way they are
... I recall when were driving from Dover to Cadiz reroute to Tenerife where we lived,
I was very tired by the time we hit Southern Spain, we booked a night in this sort of Motel place and at 1-00am I was woken up by some Spaniards along the hall - it was some racket I can tell you ... I shouted as loud as I possibly could - NOISE! I'LL GIVE YOU ------- NOISE!! and I leapt out of bed (like a mad man) and created the mother of all rackets and ... you could hear a pin drop - for the rest of the night. ZZZZZZZZzzzzz

We may change motors soon and I am looking specifically at a 52 plate Mondeo V6 Ghia X Auto Estate. 43k miles. Drove it this afternoon and all seems OK. All service stamps in place from main dealers. Obviously very well specified. Awaiting preparation shown on screen, but I know that it has had a scratch repaired (Dealer principal and salesman told me on two separate occasions). Why would they do that, but not finish the prep?

Local (ish) car. Was asking £4995 then £4495 and I have already got them well down on this without too much trying.

How much would you pay?

Best regards..............Martin. Read more
