Hi Folks,
I have recently had the head machined and pressure tested and fitted a new water pump, tensioner and cambelt. Upon initial start up, I noticed a whirring noise which I suspect is the cambelt, possibly overtightened. I removed the top cambelt cover and stopped the engine after bleeding the air bubbles from coolant system.
I noticed that the cambelt sprocket was extremely hot and the cambelt was also quite hot possibly through heat transfer from the sprocket. The rockercover was also very hot. I let everything cool down and removed the rocker cover. There seemed to be an adequate supply of oil to camshaft. I do remember that the camshaft did not seem to be binding but cannot discount that. Any advice would be gratefully received.

hi i have a 96 corsa 1.4 auto. Recently the car has started engageing snow mode intermitterly. which is the cars auto box trying to start off in its top 3rd gear any ideas ?? Read more
The gearbox hasn't gone into 'snow mode' as you call it. It's gone into limp home mode as there is a fault with the gearbox. You'll need to get any fault codes read out to establish what the problem is.
It could be that the fluid just needs changing, or the selector switch on top of the gearbox needs stripping down and the internal electrical contacts cleaning and regreasing. As I said though, best to get the fault codes read out which takes away any guesswork.
Hi,
My peugeot 206 has a knocking noise when the accelreator is released. When driving it is fine. If i coast in neutral there is no noise and when the clutch is dissengaged the noise is reduced greatly.
Anyone have any ideas?

I replaced my 6-CD Changer a year ago because it failed to load/change CDs. It made a horrible graunching noise and required dismantling the changer to remove the CDs.
A year later, exactly the same thing has now happened to my replacement CD changer. Again, I've had to remove the unit, dismantle it and rescue my CDs.
On top of this, the radio is now failing. After driving for 30-40 minutes, suddenly the interference gets so great that I have to switch off. The interference affects all stations.
This interference problem happens every day. Does anyone have any suggestions as to what is going wrong with the CD Changer and the radio? Read more
Thanks, Kith. I'll check everything you've suggested and report back.
SWMBO has been whining about the alternator drive belt on her Saxo, which was slack and whining. Anyway, I managed to put it off till tomorrow for about the last month, until today she pulled the dastardly trick of threatening to go to a garage and pay for it.
Nothing for it but to grab the Haynes and see what "modern car nightmares" awaited. According to Mr H the front wheel had to come off, followed by the wheelarch liner and the unclipping of a pipe which was in the way. I assembled the jack, axle stands and tools and steeled myself for the miserable task of trying to locate the thirty thousand mud caked screws which held the liner on, the said item which would then distort and be a nightmare to screw back on again afterwards.
Then I thought, "Hang on, lets have a peep underneath before I jack it up and see what I can see". What I could see were the two tensioner retaining bolts and the adjuster, all within easy reach of an arm with a relaxed bend at the elbow and no obstructions. Two minutes with an Allen bit and a socket and it was job done, no jacking or removing half the front of the car.
Do Haynes actually do half of these jobs themselves, or do they just look at some drawings and guess? I have had exactly the same sort of mis-information from the book when I changed the starter motor and the alternator on my Mondy, both missing things out and adding un-nescessary removal of componants. I don't tinker as much as I used to anymore, but from my youth I recall Haynes manuals as being accurate and comprehensive. Or is my memory playing tricks, and they were always carp?

Hi, we've just bought a 3 year old car with one of these fitted and (according to the garage) working. However, it is not connected. Does anyone know where I could get a copy of the instruction book from? Read more
Hi all,
could anyone tell me how much of a job it is to change the cam belt on a 94 carina e.
Could a compitent mechanic (on the side) be able to do it,or would it need to go into a garage. The car has done 110k. I suppose I have got another 15k or so before it needs doing.
Thanks,
Bullybeef.

Thanks Andrew,
thats all I wanted to know. It won't hurt the wallet too much anyway.
Hello all,
I am wondering if its possible to change the rear wheel bearing at home or whether the job requires a hydraulic press to remove or install the bearing and therefore best to leave it to a garage. I have the Haynes manual at home but I'm a bit skeptical of the advice therein.
I would also like a some confirmation of my diagnosis of the wheel bearing being at fault in the first place. I get a metalic grinding sound from the nearside rear wheel when I apply the brake pedal. I have removed the rear drums on both sides on the rear axles and there is plently of "meat" left on the shoes and no signs of metal grinding on metal hence the wheel bearing being at fault as the brakes appear fine.
Many thanks

The noise of a worn bearing would be present when you spin the wheel or you could feel any free play.
Take a look at the brakes now is there a lip on the drum? ( grind/buff off)
Are the wheel cylinders ok not leaking? do the pistons work ok?
These are adjusted up ok?
Its very difficult at a key board when you can't hear the noise! maybe take it to a garage for a second opinion.
Car parked on sloping drive facing downhill when engine just cut out. Recovery man simply wheeled car onto level bled the fuel line and off we went. He claims that he had a number of such incidents and it was to do with the low fuel level ( there was 22litres in the tank)and the car on an incline which caused the engine to gulp air. Volvo dealer denies any knowledge of such an incident. Read more
Thanks for that. Altho we had over 100+ mls (20ltrs) in the tank, the fact the car was on a slope would have reduced the amount available. As we were in Wales and touring I hate to think what would have happened had we been stuck up a hillside in a traffic jam!
I've got about UK£ 3 grand to spend on a fun car - limited use, weekends etc. Not a daily driver. I've seen a 1997 MGF advertised (UK£2850), with the following "boy racer" apparel fitted. I've no idea if this list of accessories is impressive. Should I take a look at the car or run away..?!

At present has Sony Mini Disc head unit, this may stay with the car, and will also be supplied with mini disc stereo component to allow recording of minidisks from CD or this may be exchanged for Sony CD head unit currently in another car.
So, what do you all reckon?! TIA! Read more
Ooops, I need to update my profile!
The car is going to be bought in NZ, where I'm going "on sabbatical" to escape these recessionary times :-)
Plenty of unmodified, clean MGFs from 95-98 seem to be available for nearer UK£2k so I'm probably better off seeking one which hasn't been excessively meddled with?!

If this is the case how do I check it out?
Thanks,
