971.4 Overheating problem after cambelt change - Foxy0-0
Hi Folks,
I have recently had the head machined and pressure tested and fitted a new water pump, tensioner and cambelt. Upon initial start up, I noticed a whirring noise which I suspect is the cambelt, possibly overtightened. I removed the top cambelt cover and stopped the engine after bleeding the air bubbles from coolant system.
I noticed that the cambelt sprocket was extremely hot and the cambelt was also quite hot possibly through heat transfer from the sprocket. The rockercover was also very hot. I let everything cool down and removed the rocker cover. There seemed to be an adequate supply of oil to camshaft. I do remember that the camshaft did not seem to be binding but cannot discount that. Any advice would be gratefully received.

What do you mean by 'very hot' was there smoke? It will normally not be far below boiling point.

No, there was no sign of smoke but my problem is that the camshaft sprocket was extremely hot to touch as if something was overheating. Is this normal, I think not?

It could be the camshaft bearing(s) that are not getting their oil supply.

If this is the case how do I check it out?
