I have a leaking Lucas Injection pump.
I first noticed it when I smelt diesel oil on a hot engine after I turned the engine off to get out of the car.
What happens is as follows : as I start the engine looking at image
picasaweb.google.com/kessack/306LucasLeakingIp/pho...4
the oil wells up somewhere above point "A"
Then flows downwards towards point "B" and starts dripping off the engine.
I tried to tighten "C" but things got only slightly worse so I thought I'd better ask before moving forward.
"D" is hex and too large diameter for any socket I have currently.
Help appreciated.
Jim
p.s. top view showing "D" larger hex and "C" smaller hex

Im toying with the idea of buying one but they seem really thin on the ground. Are there any good ones left?
Were there any issues with these models? How much should you pay for a good one?
Oh and yes I know they are dog slow but economy is measurably better than the petrols and thats more important to me.
One thing that I found curious - I got quoted virtually the same price for insurance on one of these as for my Fiat Seicento - whats going on there?

My boss has a problem with his '05' Range Rover and took it in to the dealer almost 2 weeks ago. They diagnosed an 'engine sensor' and have told him that it will take 2 to 3 weeks to get the part.
His is the BMW derived diesel engine - surely they should be able to get one quicker than that? It seems pretty odd that BMW or LR can't obtain one. Read more
Every time I ever order a part for my BMW no matter how obscure it
is never in stock but always there for collection the day after.
Varies by brand and by part required. I have always found Mitsubishi one of the best - very expensive parts and usually next day delivery, even on obscure import parts.
BMW about average I think, they tend to be poor on availability for older cars. Quite a few slow-moving parts for E32/E34 are no longer available. I remember trying to source a door handle for an 8-year old E32 and it was 'obsolete' - had to source s/hand. I thought that was poor.
Mercedes brilliant, even for very old motors.
VW poor - 2 weeks wait for a Polo oil pressure switch
Hi, I am new to the site, but am looking to take out either a blue or silver BCA card. I will only be buying about six cars a year max.
Will either of these cards gain me any advantage, or cost saving in terms of buyers premium etc? Any advice would be most welcome. Read more
Interesting that people seem to ignore red traffic lights with impunity these days and yet if these same people meet a set of lights that are out of order then chaos ensues,it seems that 90% of the population do indeed need nannying to the point of cradle to grave if they cant use common sense and can gridlock a town on a quiet sunday afternoon because they dont know how to cope with a simple set of broken ones
what happened to those nice policemen with their white gloves as well? all retired now i guess Read more
Seems one or two places have done precisely that , and - surprise, surprise - traffic flows more smoothly and there are now no accidents.

Not a car Q. but I know there are a lot of clever people on here so........
I replaced all my warning lights on the dash on my '98 Africa Twin with LED's today.
Anyway. They all work, very well too, excpet that the indicator flasher relay seems to swap the current flow direction to the dashboard bulb depending on what way you indicate!!!
So with a normal bulb, no problem, but with the LED it only blinks when you indicate left (Or right depending what way round!)
Yes I found this out once the screen, dash and upper cowling were back together.
I guess a 12v flasher relay is a pretty generic item apart from the shape so anyone know where you can get one that just flashes the dashboard light without messing about with current flow?! Also there were a couple of wires cut on it but all the bulbs work and always have done so....
I assume the fast-paced world of blinky wee lights has moved on in this area of course. ;o)

Not sure I'm going to get a reply after all this time, but how was this sorted mss1tw?
I've got the same problem, also found the bridge rectifier on Ebay but no idea what to do with them???...
My 1999 Rover 414, 47k miles, not driven particularly had has developed an intermittent whistle / screech. It comes from the front offside when going around a bend at 30 to 40 mph ish. The front brake pads were changed 10k miles ago (11 months ago). Could it be a wheel bearing on the way out? The car was my fathers so everything is original except the tyres, exhaust & front pads. Sounds like it could be the metal shim that fits between the calliper and the pad, it could be catching on the disc.

just been out for a sunday afternoon thrash,
and have seen about 6 cars with Bikes strapped to the back.ALL the lights and Rear windows were almost completely covered by the bikes that they were carrying.
These racks are for sale in Halfords and other car shops,,,are they legal?? i was under the assumption that we drivers are not allowed to cover our lights??So how is it that these shops are allowed to sell bike racks that cover the lights and indicators??
i could understand these racks covering the rear windscreen, but surely not be allowed to cover the rear lights and bumper??
And if they cover the lights etc, isnt it bad that most of them had kids in the back?? brake lights covered..rear shunts???

Having learned to drive before the days of brake lights I don't rely on them to tell me when a car in front is braking. Provided you're not too close behind and provided you're as alert as you should be then brake lights are not necessary.

Hi,
I have a 52 plate Nissan Almera Tino. Good reliable mini-MPV purchased 18 months ago for £6k (36,000 miles on the clock then).
I re-programmed the locking system for a replacement key fob.
Somehow, I've switched off the anti-hijack feature, i.e. the driver's door unlocking on one plip, the remaining doors opening on the second plip. All doors open on the first plip.
Can anyone advise me how to switch the anti-hijack feature back on?
Thanks.

The remote fob for my car (Honda) has broken i.e the plastic round where the key ring goes has snapped so it's no longer attached to the key. I've tried gluing it back together for the time being but I wonder if it's possible to get a new case for it or is it likely to be a new one from the dealer which I would imagine isn't cheap!
Thanks

Good luck and let us know how you go on!!

Go to a good motor factor - a new stop solenoid should be under £20 (recently bought one for a similar Lucas pump and it cost £13!). The sealing washer will probably be rubber, but it doesn't matter as it's obviously leaking from further up the solenoid. easy to fit as well - simply disconnect wires, unscrew, and replace. Watch out for the plunger dropping out though!
