Hi,
Just started to notice my Mondeo pinking a bit: like when keeping a moderate speed up a slight hill in 4th or 5th, and also when idling with a load on (eg the two heated windows, or full lights). Can only hear it with the window open so it may have been doing it for a while. Only seems to do it when fully warm.
Car has done 75k, was serviced by Ford about 6k ago and new plugs fitted.
Any thoughts gratefully received.
Cheers,

Near me there is regularly parked a G-reg Shogun. I have rarely seen the owner but I did yesterday as I saw him carefully strapping a baby in to a baby-seat on the rear seat. Good for him.
Then he got in the driver seat and drove away, unbelted himself . I say drove away- more of a crawl, as this Shogun has on the front of it about half a ton of bull-bar metalwork. So he is aware of the dangers to his child, but apparently not those which threaten him , or the menace he creates for other roadusers with the junk sticking out from the front of his ugly car.
I know it's illegal now for bull-bars to be fitted to a new car, but there still seems to be many older vehicles around with them on. What about banning them altogether? Read more
Roo bars are for roos, bull bars are for bulls. Pick-up trucks in some parts of Africa often used to have substantial bars at the back, like roll bars but tapering from the top of the cab backwards. Probably do work as roll bars, and give the outside passengers something to hold on to or hide under.
I doubt if these bars are much more dangerous to pedestrians than the front of a Land Rover defender without bars (i.e. pretty dangerous, but not guaranteed lethal). So if people want them and are prepared to carry the weight etc., I really can't bring myself to give a damn. They can't be said to be needed though. No roos, bulls chained up and under control, few outside passengers in pick-up trucks (probably get run in straight away if any are seen these days. Tchah!).
Hi all, I am picking up a ford Ka on sunday. 2003 model. 13,600 miles from new with full ford s/h. It has the 1.3i duratec engine fitted. Are these reliable engines, and what are they like to work on for basic servicing. Thanks all. Graham.

I have a W-Reg 5-door Fiesta Finesse
Just had my car recently serviced (feb) and about two-three weeks later noticed a fishy/horse smell coming from my heaters. Since I've been transporting a lot of manure about I didn't think much of it. Last week my dad went into hospital and I had to transport my mum in the car and seeing as it was 2am she wanted the heating on.
No luck - and I'd been noticing a clonking noise coming out of the dash.
Next day I checked the coolant level and noticed the tank totally empty - nothing in the pipes at all. So I filled up (overfilled in fact) and noticed that two days later the level has dropped below the min level.
I've checked below the car this morning and I've got a few drops of oil and a bit of water underneath - not puddles but just general dampness. Doesn't seem to be a fast leak and because of the smell I'm thinking there might be a leak in the heater matrix?
Anything common I should be looking for? Oil seems to be coming from roughly the same place. It has been eating oil recently but I've not noticed any coming from the exhaust.
both leaks are coming out roughly by the drivers side front wheel Read more
I could have done, but at the time I went to visit the garage in the afternoon of posting no-one had replied. Since then unfortunately I have had compulsory long working hours.
It seemed pointless to get it done however when I knew there was a leak in the system and it was coming from around the pump area and the heating matrix. The radweld has temporarily done the job for me. No fishy smell this morning. If and when the radweld fails I'll pop along to my garage and get it pressure tested and probably replace the heater matrix and pump. Thanks for all the advice though!
My 2002 Audi A4 air conditioning is stuck on the economy setting and as such it will not cool as well at it used to.
I have had it recharged and this made some differenbce to its cooling ability, but is still not as good as it should be.
Anyone any ideas?
Thanks in advance

Thanks to everyone who replied.

Hi,
I had a leak in my R-reg Polo's radiator about 2 weeks ago and was recommended to try Bars Leaks. This worked well but this morning the coolant warning light came on again.
Is Bars Leaks a stop gap only or does it mean the radiator is on it's way out?
I'd appreciate any feedback.
Thanks

Looking for a used BMW 330d, anyone had experience of this car?
I'm hoping to find one with 50/60/70K on the clock for something in the region of 12000.
The only snag is that few places have more than one or two in stock - anyone know where to find a good selection?
Thanks,
Lou

Revisting this thread now that I'm in a position to buy soon.
I was thinking I'd try buying at one of the BCA auction sites, can anyone suggest which sites and which sale days will be most likely to turn up 330d saloons or tourings?
Thanks,
Lou
Hi,
anybody know a good independant seat mechanic in wolverhampton....... i need some engine work doing.
thanks in advance. Read more
ifty,
I don't know chapter and verse about the oil requirements and the many oil specs for VAG diesels, but, if your engine is a PD engine, the garage who did the service should have used oil which is specifically suitable for PD engines - check your receipt and find out what oil they used.
If your engine is a PD and the garage didn't use PD oil, then, it is possible that you have ruined the heavily loaded fuel injector cam lobes. If the garage used the wrong oil, you may have some redress against them if this is the case.
Until you are sure I'm wrong, I wouldn't continue to run the car or allow anyone to flush or drain the engine oil - analysis of the oil in the sump may be your only way to tell that your car has been incorrectly serviced.

I'm looking at purchasing a Primera from a Used Car Dealer who is offering 3 months Warranty with it.
The warranty cover is actually quite poor so I'm trying to work out what it costs them to apply this cover so I can negotiate the cost of it off the car. (I will take cover elsewhere) He states that any repairs will be return to Dealer as they make money on any repairs undertaken. Therefore I presume that this Warranty is provided/underwritten by a third party (I didn't look at the name on the Warranty Book, was too focused on what it covers, or doesn't cover in this case)..
Anyone come across this type of Warranty or have any idea who the company is that provides it?
Any thoughts much appreciated.
Thanks

There's constant confusion over warranties and guarantees - don't get distracted by it.
Under EU law, any fault that appears in a car within six months of sale (by a motor trader, not a private seller) is assumed to have been present at the time of sale. As such, the motor trader is obliged to rectify the fault. This is your statutory right - any warranty you are offered is in addition to your statutory right, but does not and cannot replace it.
AFAIK, in the UK, this EU law is enacted via the Sale of Goods Act (I stand open to correction here).
What counts as a "fault" depends on the age and price of the car. Here you have to apply common sense: if the radio or air con failed on a nearly-new car, you could reasonably expect these to be fixed. On a ten-year old motor bought for £500 the car should be roadworthy, but you would expect no redress on what would have been "optional extras" when the car was new, or on wear-and-tear items.
Ask yourself: if the dealer in question is quibbling about the terms of a warranty which is effectively an "extra", how likely would he be to honour his legal obligations in five months time were the car to develop a serious fault? Proceed with the purchase on that basis, but don't forget the Primera isn't a rare car - if you dont' get this one, there'll be plenty more out there.

Just to close this thread - car went in today for new rear subframe, so I asked them to check out the noise. Mechanic immediately diagnosed it as a worn alternator belt tensioner/guide. They have replaced it and all is well. Parts quite pricy (over £120 for all the bits and pieces) but they are Ford only parts.
The curious thing is the noise was reported to a Ford dealer last year by the car's previous owners (friends of mine, so they were being honest). Ford couldn't pin it down yet my local mechanic got it right after listening for a minute or so. Ho hum...
