Has anybody on this forum heard anything about cars catching fire by themselves (new ones)?
My C8 (4 months old) did this 2 weeks ago, and Citroen are not coming clean with providing a replacement under warranty. In fact they are basically doing nothing..
Two witnesses saw it start, after it has been locked and stationary for over an hour. The fire brigade report has noted it down as "Electrical Short Circuit - defective wiring", but still Citroen are not doing anything about it.
I know of another C8 that did the same thing not too long ago as well - in a dealers workshop! We were lucky that the kids were not in the car at the time - we often leave ( make that used to leave) our 6 month olf daughter to sleep in the car over lunch time. I am very concerned that the next people might not be so lucky..
Anybody got any advice on how to handle this? Right now my family do not have any way of getting to and from school (apart from help from friends etc)..
Moi.

My wife's Corsa has a problem with cutting out at about 4000revs. The car will rev freely when not under any load (stationary or downhill) and seems more inclined to cut out when in the higher gears.
The EM light comes on at around 4000 revs and will go out after a minute or so when the revs have dropped back to less than 4000. The engine will sometimes (in the lower gears) rev through 4000 with the EM light on.
Anyone know anything of this problem?

it will most probably be cam sensor, unless it is hard to start, however if there is wear in the timming chain then the sensor can miss read the cam timing in relation to the crank timing and put the light on , do you have a noisey engine these vehicles are prone to camchain wear
Hi
I dont have much info - but a freinds Vauxhall Corsa's what i gather to be the Engine Mangement light has come on the car has been repaired after a accident, the car proir to this had been serviced and MoT'd however she has been advised by the Garage that did the service that its nothing to do with them, but have advised that its the Air filter - Air flow Sensor???
The fault occured after, and since the car was repaired by a different garage (i assume Insurance company approved) and they again wont have anything do with it (also the Stereo does not work) although i dont know what they have advised the problem is, with the Engine managment light
I was inclined to say its the EGR Valve, (I beleive a common issue with Vauxhalls)
Anyone got Ideas

Looking to changing my Passat 1.8 petrol for one of the above, 05/55 plate, Zetec/Ghia/SRI trim & wondered which people considered the better car. Mixture of town & M-way driving. Read more
The mondeo has a better hook for your jacket, but there's more room in the boot of the vectra for samples.......
I thought I was reading a salesman's forum for a moment....
;o)
Seriously, they are both competent cars... I prefer the Mondeo's finish and handling to the Vauxhall's cheap-looking plastics and lifeless steering, but I guess it is whatever suits you....
I imagine you are doing fairly high motorway miles, so I would strongly suggest that you take an extended test drive in both cars, as there may be an aspect in one or the other that turns from a niggle to a major annoyance after a day... maybe one has seat belts that are more comfortable, or a seat that does not give you a numb b'side!
Then, if there is still no discernable difference, it might come to a comparison of the dealers... which has a better reputation for servicing and repairs, loan cars, etc.
Neither car would light my fire... but they are perfect motorway munchers.
Choose carefully... I imagine you will have to live with your choice for many miles.
I am wanting to purchase a small second car to replace our shabby 12yr old Primera, which has given up the ghost. Could anyone please advise? These are the criteria I am hoping to fulfil:
* Suitable for 2 teenage daughters to learn to drive in, this will not be their car, but the family second car.
* Cheap insurance and running costs
* Reliable
* Some street cred ? daughter no2 refuses to drive the primera
* Preferably 5 doors, but will consider 3
* X reg onwards
* Budget around £3000
I am hoping that the girls will pass their tests this summer as no1 is already at uni and no2 goes in Sept. The car will be available for them to use during holidays. Any advice welcomed, thanks Read more
hmmmmm 3 daughters actually, but 3rd is not old enough to drive yet. As for the weddings, well, I have told them that I will help them through uni, then they can get a good job and pay for their own!!!
Thanks for the advice everyone.
In the last couple of days I've had to do a round trip from the Lake District to Canterbury in Kent, with a stopover in Rutland either way (& a bit of toing & froing at the Canterbury end).
Being a bit of a quiet Northern country mouse, the thought of doing a journey that was primarily M6, M61, M62, A1, A47, A1(M), M11, M25, A2/M2, didn't exactly fill me full of joy at the prospect of a hassle free & enjoyable length of the country trip - but the reality was very different.
In over 750 miles of motoring on the above roads, I came across no congestion, no accidents, no snarlup, no road rage, no traffic jams, in fact nothing at all to impede my progress - the only things that reduced my average speed was the extensive roadworks on the London end of the M2 (IIRC) where the 'average speed cameras' were out in force.
I wasn't on a high speed run, nor an economy run and for the vast majority of the trip I had the cruise control set on a speed that was 'appropriate to prevailing the traffic conditions and allowing for steady progress' (some people may interpret this as being 80-85 mph), it was simply a long distance trip where the roads/traffic on the roads make it extremely pleasant. It was also nice and easy on the pocket, with my 300C CRD returning 44mpg.
All in all, a good run out, and I thought that you might enjoy reading about a trip that went well, rather than the steady diet of '2 hours to go 20 miles' that we all have to endure from time to time.
p.s. Lake District to Kent and back on a single tank of fuel -- not bad for a (very) large car with an automatic gearbox and a high average speed.

I'm from the South Lakes so I don't need to use the Death Road of Death route (A66) :)

This morning (5 minutes ago) I was shunted from behind by a silver Merc. Completely his fault, as he forgot to stop when the traffic in front of me came to a halt. Anyway, it was quite a thud, though I can't see any damage apart from a cracked number plate.
Is this likely to have caused non visible damage?
I will get it checked by the garage to be sure.
I got the registration, his name (from a business card) and supposedly his phone number. I think he was on his mobile at the time. Does anyone see any problem with making a claim against him if there is damage? I suppose he could claim if there is no damage to his car that it was not him. Read more
Wife had her fiesta bumped a few years back by a woman on her phone and driving a large bmw, wife saw no damage on the back of her car, gave the woman a piece of her mind and drove off.
First i knew of it was 3 days later when we went shopping in it and i put some groceries in the boot (the floor was up 6 inches)
I would never ever do my own inspection but always get an independant repairer to give it a shufty if i wasnt in the trade.
Get it checked pronto Leif
Its too late next year when it goes in for a brake pipe and the buckling is found then
Punto 1.9D 5 yrs old.
Just got a Fiat dealer quote for £455.99 to fit a cambelt kit and a new waterpump at the same time.
This breaks down as £255.99 for the cambelt kit fitted inc vat and
an *extra £200 for the waterpump fitted*.
I asked why £200 as surely the stripdown for the cambelt also exposes the water pump?and was told it was because the cooling system needed to be drained and refilled.
I later rang parts at the same Fiat dealer and found the actual waterpump costs only £53.76
I Can`t really understand the £146.24 above the parts cost of the pump when its sitting there exposed during the cambelt change......
labour rates at around £50 per hour.
Any thoughts? Read more

Currently own a '96 mondeo which has been trouble free (touch wood). Unfortunately i have problems with my knees which causes difficulty and pain getting out of the car. To me the mondeo seats seem lower compared to say a vectra. I know it has a height adjustment but i find it comfortable as it is for driving. As you can imagine when i get out of the car i am getting up hence putting strain and weight on my knee.
Have no problems with cars such as galaxy, 4x4 etc where i step down but not keen on 4x4 and mpv is a big for my needs at present. Therefore it am looking for a car that will carry myself and my 3 young children. Family size is preferred. Budget is £3500. Any recommendations? Read more
I am surprised no one in a spirit of levity has suggested a James Bond-style ejector-seat Aston... I would have myself but so loathe James Bond films that they never spring naturally to mind.

The insurer will only pay out the value of a 4 month old C8 - less excess. What you want is a replacement under warranty (do you really want one?).
I would be making a noise in the dealers - when the showroom is busy this weekend!.
