Looking to changing my Passat 1.8 petrol for one of the above, 05/55 plate, Zetec/Ghia/SRI trim & wondered which people considered the better car. Mixture of town & M-way driving.

Have a look at the coments on this post, most very relevant to your question.

Also just to say in std form the Mondeo is much more torquey than a CDTi 150 and produces as much power, the tuning companies normally quote a std TDCi 130 as around 147bhp on the dyno.

FWIW - we had 2 Mondeo TDCi 130s in our company for two years and at the end of the lease we replaced them with Vectra CDTi 120 SRI's. I wasn't impressed and my two colleagues who had to drive them weren't either so we dumped them after 3 months. Lousy performance and poor torque, horrible handling and steering, ride OK, drab interior and pillar box like rear vision. If you enjoy driving go for the Mondeo. If you're not fussed about driving, go for the Mondeo it's a better car.

Odd comparison. Why not Mondeo TDCi 155 v Vectra CDTI 150?

Because the 130 produces similar power and more torque than the 150 Vec, the 155 is much more torquey.

I'd be suprised if this was the case. However, if it is the case somebody in the
Ford marketing dept should be fired..

I've owned both.
The Vectra is better built and a comfy smooth cruiser however the SRi has lowered springs therefore a hard ride on A roads. You may want to consider Design or Elite spec instead as they have regular suspension. I find the gearchange a bit clunky. An 05/55 plate will be a facelift car with improved suspension/ride apparently.
The Mondeo is a better driver's car (especially on A roads) with smoother, lighter controls and good ergonomics. The one I had however was beset with problems -probably a lemon.
Even if the Mondeo I had was fault free I personally prefer the Vectra.
I can't comment on the diesel engines - both mine were petrols.
You'll have to try both
|
Last time around I did not consider the Vectra. Reasons included:
- It was before the new Fiat/GM diesels were out
- A lot less room in the back of the Vectra compared to Mondeo
- Driving both I much preferred the Mondeo
- Before the face-lift to the MKIII I didn't like the centre console etc. But I don't like the one in the Vectra either. With the revised dash, and the Sony 6006 CD player it was a lot nicer
I might have gone for another VW but the company scheme is now Ford group cars, Vauxhall group cars, and more recently Toyota (including Lexus). Ironically the scheme is via Leaseplan now owned by VW but still no VW group cars! But the negotiation for reduced prices was between my company and Ford, Vauxhall (old agreement) and Toyota.

As some one who had three Vaxhalls before my current Ford I have to say - no way!
|
We're all aware of your universal praise for the Mondeo Cheddar but what I said is not just my personal opinion but that of most of the motoring press. It's one of the Vectra C's USPs. Try out a Vectra yourself and inspect the quality - there's no contest.
I don't know what Vauxhalls you owned but they are probably not reflective of Vauxhall's current range - in the same way I would not compare the latest Mondeo to a 1991 Escort

I have looked at the new Vectra however as much as Iiked my 2.5V6 SRi estate the Mondeo is miles ahead in quality terms and I dont beleive the gap between the previous Vectra and say a 2002 new Vectra is as great.

No contest really, it would bne the Mondeo every time for me. Now they have soreted out the earlier High Pressure pump problems in the fuel system this is a great and un-embarassing car !

The mondeo has a better hook for your jacket, but there's more room in the boot of the vectra for samples.......
I thought I was reading a salesman's forum for a moment....
;o)
Seriously, they are both competent cars... I prefer the Mondeo's finish and handling to the Vauxhall's cheap-looking plastics and lifeless steering, but I guess it is whatever suits you....
I imagine you are doing fairly high motorway miles, so I would strongly suggest that you take an extended test drive in both cars, as there may be an aspect in one or the other that turns from a niggle to a major annoyance after a day... maybe one has seat belts that are more comfortable, or a seat that does not give you a numb b'side!
Then, if there is still no discernable difference, it might come to a comparison of the dealers... which has a better reputation for servicing and repairs, loan cars, etc.
Neither car would light my fire... but they are perfect motorway munchers.
Choose carefully... I imagine you will have to live with your choice for many miles.
