Hi,

My '97 Nissan Primera GT squeals on startup.

Basically, ignition key turned, engine started up for about one second, then followed by about one second of squealing noise, then all fine.

It's been doing this for about 2 weeks now, and hasn't got better or worse. A/C on or off, same squeal. Clutch pedal in or out, same squeal.

Does it sound like the drive belt slipping? And if so, is it a fairly simple diy job?

Thanks in advance

The start up squeel on my Primera was a sign of the poor lubrication to the top end. Remove the cam cover and there are two oil feed pipes with several pin holes that supply oil to the cams. You need to clear these holes.

I have only ever had 8v diesels; another thread mentioned a 16v HDi (A new revision I guess.)

I'm intriuged: What was the first 16v diesel released, and how does it effect the driving characteristics (If you think what 16v did to petrol engines I'm baffled as to what it will do on a diesel).

What are they like to drive? Read more

Once the engine is running, the heat from combustion keeps the
fine platinum wire glowing. This is the ignition source, AFAIK.

Ah! Thanks for that!

Hi,

I am looking for a good quality car stereo that plays CD's & MP3's that doesn't SKIP! To fit into a 51 plate Ford Focus Zetec.

Anyone recommend any? Heard Pioneer or Sony are best?! and where to buy?

I have always had Alpine for Sound but I have had a Kenwood in the focus past the 6000 CD player for the past 2 weeks.

I would go Alpine for Sound, Kenwood for bells and Whistles !

Instead of the USB adaptors why not go with a Model that takes SD Cards - 2GB Cards can be had for under £10 from Amazon now and are small enough to keep 2 in the ashtray !

6GB Should hold at least 700 songs.

You can check www.vehiclelicence.gov.uk/EvlPortalApp/

I tried the above site and it came up with the right car.
I've also found the RAC site useful www.rac.co.uk/web/vehiclechecks/dvla_lookup/

I then tried the RAC site and it came up with an earlier car to the one that the plate is currently on, so I would go for www.vehiclelicence.gov.uk/EvlPortalApp/

I have a 1997 Astra merit 1.7 TD. It will start from cold and then runs fine but if I stop the engine, I have to let it go completely cold before it will start again. At first I thought it could be fuel starvation due to a clogged filter, so I fitted a new filter but this just seemed to make it run a little better, it hasn't solved the starting problem. Does anyone know what's wrong and how to fix it?

I have a Eurobus taxi that i bought 12th feb 07. I noticed that there was a little fungus like stuff at the doors where it meets with the window. I thought it a little unusual and wondered how long the vehicle had been sitting in some field, so i checked the date of manufacture from the seat belts (a good guide) july 05, making the vehicle 18 months old before it was registered.

My concern is that, does this have any adverse affects on the vehicle, rubbers, tyres, battery, engine oil or rust in the engine etc and has there been any updates in the model during the 18 month period.

I would be greatful for any comments, the vehicle is only 4 weeks old and runs as expected. Read more

it is converted from a peugeot expert, converted into a eurobus. i never thought it would be so complicated to get the year of build, but i will contact the franchise dealer to establish this. thanks for all the help and suggestions.

I've had to change my rear brake lights 3 times in the past 200 miles, every single other bulb works fine as does every other electrical item. The blown bulbs look blackas if 20v as just gone through them.

What could be causing this problem? A dodgy alternator? The car is a 1.1 Fiesta if so I am just going to have to live with it, its not worth getting repaired. Or could their be a simple explanation for it? The bulbs are made by Ring and bought from my local petrol station.

Fixed it now, my dad went over a speed bump a bit too fast before and it probably unseated the bulb, I just took it out and put it back in again and it works fine.

Personally speaking, I couldn't live with the fuel consumption or reliability question marks of the Mazda's rotary engine. The Nissan does everything the Mazda does but with greater simplicity and near-guaranteed longevity and reliability. If the RX8 was as drop dead gorgeous as the RX7 was, I might feel differently though.
