hi, are there any web sites where i can check the reg of a car for FREE, before i buy, eg for accidents etc..
thanks

I don't think so but if it is a trade sale the dealer should provide such info for free IMHO. HPI check is £15 I think and well worth doing for a private sale. Outstanding finance is a big worry too.

A lot of the cheap ones don't include the "on finance" check. I find the cheapie checks are ok to make before travelling some distance to view. The full check before parting with the readies.

Good advice martint123
A hpi for the man in the street is £39.99 ive just checked ,so you have to be pretty serious about buying before you commit to it.
A dealer doesnt have to declare a write off vehicle but does have to if asked a straight question.
Bare in mind many many cars are chuckied up these days so a proper hpi is more imperative then ever, what usually seems too good to be true usually is

You can use this site to check which model the car is registered as, but I've never paid to use it so I don't know if it's any good. It doesn't look like they do a finace check.

being a fully paid up member of hpi i get many mailshots off them and they are always harping on about other companies information being out of date,i cant verify this just that hpi always do what it says on the can for me
the best never was chep...........

You can check www.vehiclelicence.gov.uk/EvlPortalApp/ - useful for finding out whether the car is taxed and some basic info like engine size. Also tells you the road tax class for the car.
I've also found the RAC site useful www.rac.co.uk/web/vehiclechecks/dvla_lookup/
I check both of these before even thinking about visting - not as good as an HPI, and certainly nothing about finance, but it has lighlighted a discrepancy a few times, such as the number of owners.

but it has lighlighted a discrepancy a few times, such as the number of owners.
I mean a discrepancy between the advert/listing and what's held on the DVLA computer.

Please note that apart from the official DVLA website, the sites mentioned above still record my Fiat Panda 4x4 as a Ford Escort Ghia TD which was recorded on the original documentation when it arrived back in mid 2005 and which I had corrected. In other words these sites are not very up to date.
|
HPI isn't bad, but there can be delays getting data on and off the system (once had a car listed as 'finance outstanding' when it had been paid up months before). Bear in mind that lots of hire companies and fleets are self-insured - so damage won't show up. Also check out the salvage in Autotrader for 'Not recorded' etc.

I tried the above site and it came up with the right car.
I've also found the RAC site useful www.rac.co.uk/web/vehiclechecks/dvla_lookup/
I then tried the RAC site and it came up with an earlier car to the one that the plate is currently on, so I would go for www.vehiclelicence.gov.uk/EvlPortalApp/
