18 months old before being registered - taxi man
I have a Eurobus taxi that i bought 12th feb 07. I noticed that there was a little fungus like stuff at the doors where it meets with the window. I thought it a little unusual and wondered how long the vehicle had been sitting in some field, so i checked the date of manufacture from the seat belts (a good guide) july 05, making the vehicle 18 months old before it was registered.

My concern is that, does this have any adverse affects on the vehicle, rubbers, tyres, battery, engine oil or rust in the engine etc and has there been any updates in the model during the 18 month period.

I would be greatful for any comments, the vehicle is only 4 weeks old and runs as expected.

This what HJ says you should do to lay a car up, in a garage, for 3 months

Have the oil and filter changed. Make sure the coolant corrosion inhibitors have not degraded (they usually have after 3 - 4 years, so have the coolant changed). If the car has ABS, make sure the brake fluid has been changed within the past two years or the ABS pump could suffer internal corrosion from moisture absorbed by the fluid. Clean and polish the car. Take it for a reasonable length dry run to thorougly heat through all systems and evaporate off any condensation. Overpressure the tyres to 40+psi help prevent them flatspotting, then put it in the garage still hot from the run. Connect up to a trickle charger which monitors the battery and keeps it to a constant 13.5 volts without damaging the electronics. Leave one window open a crack to keep the interior ventilated, but not open enough to allow mice to get in. Cover with a cotton sheet.

If yours has been in the open, or not, for 18 months it will be in very poor shape, long term, I would have thought.

seat belts are a good guide with high volume mass produced stuff - not sure about lower volume more specialist stuff, so dont jump to conclusions.

Is the build date in the handbook ? What about the vin code ?

All you can say for certain is that the seat belts were made in July 05. Unlike volume producers; these belts may have been made in a large batch and have been stored at either the belt manufacturers or the vehicle makers.

Get your supplier to read the build code contained in the VIN number. That's a far better guide.

i have looked at the vin code, but does not appear to follow the usual format of the 10th letter denotes the year, but i have a number. the code is as follows, if anyone can make any senes of it,

vf3barhwb86 {rest of VIN removed. See further down for reason. DD}

Your dealer should be able to give you a build date. I wouldn't worry too much about it, many Subarus have often sat around for months if not years before being sold without ill effects.

your probably right. i think i was a little shocked when i read the date of the seatbelt, but on reflection, it may not be be a true representation of the build date. thanks for all the input, appreciated.

Further to this, I found a site which will de-code you VIN and it came up with this for yours

tinyurl.com/2uwghn

This gives the build date as 2008 which isn't likely! Did you have a typo in your VIN, as posted|?

If you look at the bottom of the site the time is given as "Pacific Seaboard Time";it's an American site and does not work on all Euro VIN.

Some VIN numbers don't always seem to work; or maybe there is an error here. Might not be a good idea to post the whole VIN on an open forum. There's always some little scroat about. Just the first 11 characters will do.

VF3 is very familiar; built in France by PSA. The RHW is the engine code; 2.0 ltr 16 valve HDi in emission-laden commercial spec.

point taken about posting it on the forum. i think the vehicle identification numbers outwith high volume production vehicles follow a diffrent format, as it is the correct number from the log book.

Does it match the one on the vehicle? [Should be visible at the base of the windscreen.]

the code is on the inside of the drivers door post on this vehicle and it matches

European VIN's don't follow the USA requirements in all cases. On Euro Fords, for example, the last two letters before the last five figures of the VIN are the year and month code.

Manufacturers don't leave tyres lying around in the factory, so check the date stamps on the tyre walls, this should give you another indication of age.

I'm assuming that this vehicle is a converted Peugeot Expert or Citroen Dispatch which you've purchased from the converters direct? Whichever manufacturers vehicle it is based on, a franchised dealer should be able to give you the exact build date from the VIN number.
18 months old before being registered - jc2
Most European VIN can only be read to "year of build" by people without access to production records;on some cars, you can't even work out the year of build;as said elsewhere, look at various components.
18 months old before being registered - taxi man
it is converted from a peugeot expert, converted into a eurobus. i never thought it would be so complicated to get the year of build, but i will contact the franchise dealer to establish this. thanks for all the help and suggestions.
