Thinking of getting a 320d, can anyone tell me when the common rail was introduced, which ones had the turbo probs, and would the direct injection be better or worse than the cr, thanks Read more

Hi,

I wonder if anyone could give me an idea of the prices at auction for an alfa 156 jtd sportwagon diesel?

Looking at the online glasses guide it is quoting very reasonable prices for 2001/2002 models. However I cant see anything like that low on autotrader. there are some on ebay but I could easily spend a lot of time travelling to look at rubbish and being in North Yorkshire there are not many very close to us.

So I am thinking of speaking to one of the auction buyers, but I dont want to waste their time if the prices are actually far higher than glasses suggests.

thanks

Sorry Uda, no idea on where you might source a haynes-type manual, although there is a prolific market for workshop CDs for Fiats and Alfas on ebay. I had a workshop manual CD for the 156JTD and it was superb.

SWMBO has suffered five puncures in around 30k miles - two repairable and three new tyres. In comparison I have suffered 2 in the last 250k in company cars.

I am considering Ultraseal for her tyres - cost for all four of around 50% of the price of one new tyre.

Anyone any experience of this product? Read more

I used some peach coloured goop a few years ago, after an expensive spate of non-repairable punctures.
It wasn't great, it would centrifuge out of the hole and leave a line of splat on the wheel arc liner. The only good thing it would do it prevent sudden deflations and slow them down to over a few days. There were no balancing problems, and when I had a tyre replaced, the goop had formed a thin and neat uniform layer over the inside of the tyre, rather like pva glue when half dry, it didn't run, once spead out, it was more like gravy or custard after you spread that out - it stays where it is.

Hi,

Driving home from work today, i stopped on a shallow hill to let cars past me, then when pulling off again there was a pop/bang and then no drive to the wheels.

Engine is fine, revs properly, but no gears therefore no drive. Trying to engage a gear it sounds like something knocking around under the car.

The car is sitting where i pushed it to and got a lift home, but i'll take it to a garage on Saturday. Nothing hanging obviously loose under the car.

So, is it the gearbox? The clutch? Or, ideally, the gearbox linkages coming off? There was no warning of this happening at all and i'm pretty sure i didn't hit anything/run anything over.

Clutch and gearbox are both original at 163k but neither was particularly ropey.

Any idea of cost to fix, whichever problem it may turn out to be?

Thanks in advance

How can a drive shaft problem cause problems engaging gears?

Folks, thought I would share with you my most surreal motoring day to date...

8.45am -- I take my 3 series BMW into a well known independent specialist for a few minor bits and pieces to be attended to (Air con re-gas, minor electrical gremlin, etc. etc.). Agree mid afternoon collection.

3pm (agreed time of collection). Return to the garage (car is still in identical parking spot from this morning), told to wait a few moments by the receptionist. She leaves me for 5 mins, then returns, clearly very embarrassed and explains that it appears everyone forgot to carry out the work.

I stood there thinking this was a wind-up for a couple of seconds, but, no, it transpires, genuinely, everyone working there had forgotten to attend to the car.

I left, bemused and surprised - slightly upset, and wrote them a letter expressing my dis-satisfaction. I wonder what their response will be. Has anyone ever had anything similar happen to them???

I had almost the exact reverse. Took my car to a main dealer for routine service. They were to ring me when ready for collection. Phone call came in a bit sooner than I expected, but I went around and there was my car on the hoist without wheels { full brake inspection was part of that particular service }. At least I then knew that the service was being done, but don't know about the owner that the garage should have rung.

Help!!

My Punto has just had a new head gasket and clutch (last week). At the moment its temperature light keeps coming on. Just wondering why it keeps coming on - esp when i'm in stationary traffic. Sometimes it goes off again once I start moving and sometimes it just stays on. You can hear the fan kicking in but that doesn't seem to make it go off - it's not losing water as its water level is just under max - I keep checking it!

It's worrying me to death - esp after i've just had a new head gasket / cam belt and clutch to the tune of £450 - I don't want it to pack in again.

Any ideas anyone??? Read more

Thanks for your help - i will speak to the garage that fixed it in the morning.

Thanks again.

Son and wife had a problem. Needed to change their hatchback for something that will better accommodate seat for expected baby. She sends him out at midday today to buy something suitable. He comes round this afternoon to shake up my pacemaker on the by-pass with his new Mitsubishi Evo. Exhaust pipe big enough for a sewer, 0-60 in 3.9. secs, 157 m.p.h. (governed, but he mentions special tuning kits), no suspension to speak of. He hasn't been home yet. How can he convince her this is the best solution to the problem? Read more

A colleagues husband uses an Impreza for similar family duties. Apparently the chief advantage is that, with blacked out drug dealer style rear windows, nobody can tell the kids are in the car so he can still pretend to be cool.

Having read reports of the Focus cutting out, I thought I would ask if anyone has an answer to my problem.
Twice my engine has cut out when i was turning right or left at about 10-15 mph. All the dashboard lights come on, steering is well nigh impossible, but if I dip the clutch, turn the ignition key, the engine immediately fires up and everything is normal! A friend has had the same problem several times but with a 2002 car. My garage have just changed the crank angle sensor as a possibility. Has anyone else had the same problem, and if so have they managed to resolve it? Read more

Use the 'Forum Search' (right hand menu) for Focus Speed Sensor, plenty of threads with similar symptoms which in the main are down to a faulty speed sensor.
