There seem to be a number of car owners/registered keepers who have difficulty remembering who was driving the car they are responsible for at any given time. It's usually when the car's driver has been caught speeding or committing some other offence, like running a red light.

For the people who can't remember who they allow to drive their car, wouldn't it be sensible to expect them to keep a record?

Deal with uninsured, unregistered, untaxed, unroadworthy vehicles being driven by unlicensed drivers before trying to deal with this minor problem.

Lest you think I've been off in analogy-land or that the vehicles described above are an exaggeration, a friend of mine collided with a motorcycle. It was uninsured, unregistered, untaxed and the rider held no licence. I have no knowledge as to its roadworthiness (though I suspect given the other facts, there's a chance that maintenance may not have been top of the rider's agenda).

Is it more important to get them off the road, or to add a legal requirement for me to keep track of who is driving my car at any given time, a log that will probably mean nothing in law, as it can't be verified?

That's all I ask. As I keep repeating, leave us alone.

My mum has decided that she wants to see if she can find an alternative to her Hyundai Coupe V6.
She had a look at the revised model today and she loves it as she thinks the revisions have been very accurate in that they answered alot of the criticisms she had of hers
( heater controls, lack of heated seats, cup holder location, outside temp gauge arrangement etc ).

Anyhow, shes fancies the 2.0 litre auto this time round but wants to know what other automatic coupe or CC's are around and more importantly, which have a good ownership experience as she doesnt want to downgrade in reliability and customer service that she gets from Hyundai.

Her budget is about £18,500 but less would be nice - any suggestions as to which of the ones available is best?

She is also keen to look at the Impreza 2.0 auto as she likes driving them, but thats her wildcard option. Read more

Hi. You know on fords the cd/cassette player unit is big.
Does anyone know what that thing is called where you clip it in so you can fit in a aftermarket cd player.
I know it black and fills in the gap.

I hope someone can make sence of this.

The heater blower on my Mk5 Escort Estate for some unknown reason has stopped working. The fuse is okay, I picked up another blower at the scrap yard, swopped it over but still no luck. Thought it might be the switch - swapped that over but still no sign of life. Connecting the blower directly to the battery and it springs into life.
Any advice on what to look at next? Its getting pretty cold just now.
Cheers

Looks like you've lost the feed to the PATS. Check all the fuses in the new box; particularly 7; 11; 13; 14; 16; 32 and 33. There's an astonishing number of variations in fusebox layout for a mundane car and it's possible that this new box isn't wired for PATS.

You might just have a cracked fuse; turn the ignition on and check that every fuse that's live at one end is also live at the other. Quite a quick task with ATO fuses - if you've got a pointed test lamp.

just a timely reminder to eveyone to make sure they get a few quotes before renewing. just received a quote of £254, after getting a few quotes got it down to £143. i always get a few quotes and normally my usual insurer is very competitive, but this time with a change of vehicle they seem to have tried it on!!!

It depends on whether you just want the cheapest insurance you can get or whether you want quality. I've yet to find a policy that equals the one I've got for quality so I've stuck with the same company for more than 40 years.

Failure to confirm to the indication given by a traffic sign (red light) is an offence that requires service of NOIP within 15 days of the offence (14days ignoring the date of the offence). I presume that this was sent by post and only Reg Post, rec delivery or First class post is allowed. Have they complied with these two items?

Along with the NOIP will be a form sent by or on behalf of the Chief Officer of Police under Section 172 Road Traffic Acxt 1988.
This form will ask you as the Reg Keeper to name the driver. It has to be signed and sent back within 28 days otherwise an offence committed .

If all in order at Para 1 and you comply with para 2 naming yourself as driver then next step is that you will get a Conditional Offer. Pay £60 collect 3 points and the matter is over (apart from you informing Insurance Company - read your policy).

Regarding Section 172 there is a defence if you can show that you did not know and could not with reasonable dilegence have ascertained who the driver of the vehicle was. You will therefore have to collect evidence such as photo from Camera people, enquiries amongst those that could have had access to your vehicle or driven it. This will have to be pleaded before a Court to the satisfaction of the Bench. Bear in mind, what was a legitimate defence has been abused that much that it may take some pleading. Obviously if you are going down this road then there will be no need to sign 172, return with the papers stating that you are pleading Not Guilty and await service of summons.

As mentioned, if you incorrectly nominate some other who was the driver, you are treading in dangerous waters and what attracts a a nominal fine/points could esculate into something very serious for both.

HELP, HELP, HELP!

I am having a bad day .. please can someone help .. i'll take a few moments to explain and won't miss anything out in case it's important and I've over looked something. I'm no expert but this is driving me up the wall!

OK Here is the situation ..

P Reg 1997 Vaux Corsa 1.2i Vegas. 62K and very well looked after. Recently took half a day to service using engine flush as the other half uses the car for short journeys and rocker box can show signs of emulsification. Ran through the basics, flush, oil, filter etc etc. At the same time fitted new pads, discs and arranged for 4 new tyres. Poured a bottle of Wynns Petrol Treatment in prior to driving home from a friends house where the work was carried out. From memory I added the petrol treatment to around 15l of petrol and not a full tank as recommended. All basic stuff. Drove beautifully on way home and there is stayed til the next morning.

Next day, turned the key and nothing. Battery is spot on but there is absolutely no firing at all. Friend of mine took a look and we found that with determination and a lot of fuel flooding problems we could get the car running, albeit misfiring badly, and when it warmed up it was ok. He checked plugs and other stuff and once the car was driven it was fine. Next morning the car was fine. That evening it wouldnt work again.

Friend looked at car again and this time we couldnt get it going. He removed plugs and heated them up on my gas cooker. Once replaced, car turned over almost immediately. We then asked another friend to run a diagnostic and he found coolant temp sensor high when the car was still relatively cold. As this was only £11 to change, I went ahead and bought the sensor and fitted it. The car started and off we went.

Next morning - nothing again.

Took it into Vauxhall and left it with them. It started first time and they rang me and said there is nothing wrong with it. I asked them to keep it in overnight and run it from cold. The car fired up again perfectly from cold and I picked up the car and brought it home.

Guess what - next morning, get in the car and it wont start!

Vauxhall think there may be a problem with injector or ecu message regarding injector as there were previous fault codes but they have been resolved. Usual vauxhall prices £300+ vat no labour for each option.

Anybody got any ideas. Seems intermittent and that would suggest electrics?

I have bought a single point injector unit for £40 from breaker and see if this could be faulty?

Anyone who can help me resolve this is officially a genius

Any help appreciated ...

Were it not for the fact that you've already changed the coolant temp sensor; this one would have been obvious.

There have been problems with the connexions on the coolant sensors on these, so maybe there's an intermittent loss of contact and the ECU then thinks it's fuelling for -40C. There may be a modified loom available; check with Vaux parts.

Check the contacts in the plug are sound and clean and consider the possibility of a faulty new sensor?

Hi Posters:

My sister's car had the most expensive consumable cost. IF she is lucky she replace a bulb at least once every 2 weeks. Its either front headlamp bulb or rear brake/tail lights.

I just wondering if anyone have expereinced this problem. The car is a 2001 Golf 1.4 S.

The car has too many problem: the was flooded with water, now this problem has been fixed. The drink a few litres of oil every 6000 miles. However, the bulb failure issue is still continuing..She is think of sellling the car off to stop.

I told her that let me drop a message on here first and see if anyone can help with the bulb issue.

I know some Japanses car's has the slow starting electronic circuit which prevent headlamp subjected to initial transients during switch on the headlamp/bulbs. Do they have this on the Golf? I'm wondering tif this circuit has failed or may the alternator is generating too much volts?

Any thoughts will be welcomed..

"drink a few litres of oil every 6000 miles."

I presume you mean the engine and that a 'few' litres is, maybe, three?

Never mind the bulbs...something much bigger is on its way out. Even in a knackered G-reg fiesta that I knew was losing oil to somewhere, it wasn't drinking this much.

Car was flooded you say?

Did the bulb blow in quick succession prior to the flooding?

Question oil for Honda?

I have just bought a Honda Varadero motorcycle.

I had planned using castrol magnatec 10 w 40 w when changing oil.(semi synth)

According to the guy in the shop, I should use an oil specially for motorcycles as car oil can wreck the wet clutch!

Any help there please? Read more

Castrol recommend GPS 10W-40 (or GP 10W-40 as an alternate recommendation)

tinyurl.com/2aurx3

Mind you, I have used Castrol mineral oil (I think 20w/50) in my CB-125TDC for as long as I can remember because when I used to use the recommended 10w/40 it used oil like there was no tommorow. No harm has yet come of it. Yours is a more modern motor though, so don't get using 20w/50 on my say so.
