just a timely reminder to eveyone to make sure they get a few quotes before renewing. just received a quote of £254, after getting a few quotes got it down to £143. i always get a few quotes and normally my usual insurer is very competitive, but this time with a change of vehicle they seem to have tried it on!!!

I renewed mine a few days back - some quotes were very competitive from other insurers but the Excess on the other policies was very high.
For Example - Voluntary Excess was stated as £200 - which was fine until you saw the compulsory excess was £350 - making it £550 in total for a blame claim. A bit steep!
Altered the quotes back to a standard £200 / £250 maximum and my existing insurer was cheaper by at least £35 - paid £180 in the end.

Just received my renewal for a 258bhp/444NM chip tuned V70 2.4T that has been declared to my insurer (NU via Adrian Flux's Special Vehicles team that handles non standard cars) from Day One; £600 bar the pennies, like last year and the years before with max NCD; quite a substantial hike, and a phone call to the SV team confirmed that they had tried shopping around for me before sending out the renewal invitation. I believe them; phoning around the specialist brokers (none of the direct outfits have modified cars anwhere near their radar), the cheapest I could get was £475, but look carefully and it's not like for like. I would lose:
Protected NCD
Unlimited personal miles
Business mileage cover (an absolute prerequisite)
Fully cover to normal Ts and Cs when abroad in Europe
Unlimited time abroad to normal Ts and Cs
£75 +£100 "modified car" excess and replace it with £350 excess
Courtesy car
24x7 direct helpline in the event of an accident
...and no doubt more; I stopped looking
Given that my V70 is going to spend over six weeks abroad this year that I know of already, a month of which will be in the Czech Republic (the bulk of which will be when I've flown back home and left the car with the wife and babies), I'm paying the extra £125.

I shopped around, and when I asked for the details in writing for the best quote I was told 'it applied for today only'.
Like I told the double glazing salesman - I don't deal with people like you!

It depends on whether you just want the cheapest insurance you can get or whether you want quality. I've yet to find a policy that equals the one I've got for quality so I've stuck with the same company for more than 40 years.
