Ocaisionally, such as today after a week standing in the driving rain, my '98 V6 mondeo doesn't like to start. Cranks very well - and after about 30s of cranking 1 pot will start to fire.... another 30s of cranking will have another couple of pots catching, and then it's away - with clouds of white smoke. Then it will be fine for a long time. Nothing obviously up with the motor. Dousing what I can see of the HT with WD40 doesn't appear to make any improvement.
Any ideas what's up with it?
Thanks

Hi,
I'm in the process of replacing my car and need an economical car with a large boot. I have just been looking at the stats on the 1.5 Dci (106) Scenic/Grand Scenic and it could fit the bill.
Most of my driving is motorway driving (40,000 miles pa) at a steady 70-75MPH. The fuel economy that the Scenic offers ON PAPER seem terrific, what are they actually like on the motorway? What consumpton do you guys actually get?
Also, is the 1.5 accpetable on the motorway?
I am coming from a BMW 320d so I do expect a drop in performance.
Many thanks. Read more
I suspect aerodynamcis has a lot to do with it. The Laguna is sleek, the Scenic resembles a brick in comparison.
I read somewhere that Renault were going to phase out both the 1.9 and the 2.2 now the fabulous 2.0 is here. It makes no sense for all three engines to still be in the range, the the 2.0 is a great engine, developed jointly with Nissan.

Simple problem -is there a solution. A friend's mother is having trouble reaching back to grab her seatbelt on her 3 door new shape focus. She drives with the seat fairly forward and at 70+ she really needs to find a way to bring the belt forward. I remeber seeing this on some coupes or convertibles - I just wonder if it can be retro fitted -and sourced for her Focus. All help/suggestions appreciated - and Happy New Year! Read more
The simplest solution is to pull some slack with you as your getting into the car, possibly hooking it round the side bolster of the seat while you getting comfortable - no sense making it complicated.
With my mums Hyundai Coupe, which suffers the same issue, you simply pull some slack out, put you right arm through the loop and sit in the seat. That way there is no need to reach back.
Hi
I've acquired a Gastester Pro and the instructions tell you to calibrate in fresh air so it reads 2% CO level before testing the car?
So if the CO in the exhaust gas is 2% then the reading will be the same as in fresh air?
Doesn't make much sense to me anyone understand how this works?
Thanks. Read more
Stop global warming, go for a drive!
This thread reminded me to get out and watch again my DVD of 'C'etait un Rendezvous'. Gorgeous soundtrack and not too many 'mimsers' around at that time of the morning in downtown Paris!
I've got an 03 53 punto 1.3 multijet diesel and the red engine symbol at the bottom of the rev counter comes on a minute or so after start up and stays on. Car drives as normal though, any one got any ideas what this could be? Read more
Now reconnected batt but light comes on as before. Look like off to dealers unless anyones got anymore ideas.
It's definately going to happen I think. I agree, it's another step towards removal of human decision-making. I usually turn mine on on twisty country roads, so that a chink of light may be noticed through a gap in a hedge etc....but on the way to work when it's mile-long snakes in two lanes, all with their lights on is daft, and people who normally see motorcycle headlights as they filter down the middle may now miss the them.
Our roads are generally of too poor a design to allowthe flow of traffic that warrants such a thing. They are likely to be turned off when the handbrake is on, and only operate at the front. It is expect that on new cars, they are also likely to be an array of three to five 1W LEDs using new generation Luxeon LEDs, I question whether these will be noticed as they give off a much whiter light and will be amongst the amber halogen lights of other cars which stand out during the day due to their unnatural hue.

They are saying drivers of older cars should switch dipped lights on, new cars should have them come on automatically when engine is running and handbrake released, and newly designed cars should be designed with energy-efficient dedicated DRLs.

If you're used to the space of the Granada, there are still afew forces running dog adapted Mondeo estates. Similar to the Focus HJ mentions. They really are dog carriers, not just an estate thats carried dogs - even got a fan built into the roof, for proper ventilation.
This means not to attractive as ordinary transport, as you'd never get them turned bag into a 'car'. Hence the bargain prices.
Omegas are just about finished on Police fleets as estates, in any real numbers now, even in general terms not too many about.
Forget the van option, as you'll be wasting £1000 in vat - even if you buy at auction, you'll be paying too much. Plus, say Astra estate car of same miles/year as Astravan , will be 1/3 cheaper, at least!!
