hello,
a few months back i was reading the Society of Operations engineers magazine and it had a whole bunch of recalls that it had pulled off of VOSA. one of the recalls i noticed was for the Cmax. the falut was said to be ' a mis-alignment of the oil feed up to the camshaft bearings' it goes on to say that the falut can cause premature wear to the bearings and/or engine failure. the trouble is it doesn't give much info on vehicle spec. no chassis numbers, doesn't say whether its petrol or diesel variant. it does however give a quantity of vehicles affected, 160. after numerous calls to ford, avoiding my helpless dealership, they couldn't tell me anything about this so called fault. has any body heard or dealt with this fault. i am concerned a little due to my car only having a year left on the warranty> cheers peeps! Hi,
Can anyone tell me how much oil a 200,000 mile engine should use?
I have a 01 vectra 1.8 petrol and it uses about a litre of oil every 1000 miles and I can't find any leaks.
I normally do about 1000 miles in a week and am always topping it up.
Is there anything I can do to improve this?
Thanks

But this car is getting an oil changes every 3,500 miles as, IIRC, the capacity is 3.5 litres. Although of course only the filter changed every 10,000 miles and the opportunity for any crud in the sump to be drained off.
Well, had a fun start to the New Year this morning (Happy New Year everyone, BTW !) - despite the tempertaure being well above freezing, hit a nice spot of icy road - back end did a nice double swerve ... good job the road was clear!
What was interesting was how what car you drive can really affect your chances of coming out of this OK - my old Corolla would have ended up in the nearest bush ! But my 02 Focus was a real star - slight back end wobble then got itself back in line - I'm wondering how much the fully independent multi-link rear suspension has to do with this ? Read more
The German government is going to vote later this month on fixing the max speed limit to 120kph and it seems its going to be passed the main reason being the reduction in C02 gasses ,the way they enforce speed limits in Germany there will be little point in buying a E500 when the 200 will do everything that is allowed. Believe you me young mothers are not going to be given a lump sum of 25,000 euros it covers the lifetime of the childs dependancy and is to replace an already higher benifit.
My Nissan Micra got broken into on Boxing day outside my house and I didn't know a thing until I went to get into it to go to work. Thankfully no damage but I know I locked it yet someone had got in taken my car stereo or at least they took the removable front fascia. Why would they do this? It's totally useless to them. Unfortunately they were looking for the SAT Nav as I had forgotten to take the cradle off the front window when i took it inside.
Does anyone know if it's possible to get a replacement front fascia as I still have a stereo in my car which I can't use? Read more
A friend had his Transit's side window smashed, the Police said they break in to look in the glove box for a SatNav, and are not interested in stereos any more.
The scumbag probably took the fascia out of spite

hi, i think the fault is the clutch disk but not 100% sure. there no drive on the vehicle whatsoever. symptoms are that its engine starts fine, then the forward gears are selectable with or without pressing the clutch. for the reverse the clutch has to be pressed or it grinds. none of the gears actually produce any movement on the wheels even with the front wheels off the ground. also with the engine on or off, front wheels off the ground and car in gear theres no extra resistence when turning wheels by hand as compared to when not in gear.
dont know the history of what may have happend, but assume boy racer abuse. any help most appreciated:) Read more
If the casing is smashed, cracked, or broken, you will probably be best off fitting another gearbox - you might be able to obtain one from a scrapyard or breakers.

I am getting the 910 and want to use it when I holiday in the USA.
Does anyone in the backroom know if the cigar lighter in USA cars are the same as UK cars with regards to size, voltage etc or will I need another adapter?
Thanks

Friend of mine has a CMAX 2.0 diesel. When he pulled the oil filler cap off today he saw quite a bit of gunk underneath which he's pulled out.
It looks like "mayonnaise" and I know this could happen with short runs but although he does these he tells me that he has done a few longer (20-30 mile) trips lately and I thought this might have disappeared.
The car doesn't appear to be drinking coolant so is this just a combinatation of the short runs and the weather getting a bit cooler or is there something else(i.e. the vent has blocked on the oil filler cap?)
With the design of the oil filler on the car quite a way from the engine block maybe the water vapour cools too quickly rather than being expelled through the vent (I think) on the filler cap.
thanks in advance.

id say your breather is probably blocked find the rubber pipe going to the rocker cover and remove see if it's full of the same stuff? 20-30 mls isnt really much to get rid of this worth buying a new rocker cover gasket clean out all the old mayo clean the breather and treat it to a oil & filter change!. good luck.
Hi,
I'm a new member here and have recently asked a few questions about potential future cars and have received some excellent advice, so thanks very much.
I think I may be going about this the wrong way though, I have been suggesting potential cars and asking for your thoughts. What I really should be doing is asking what you would choose if you were in my shoes!!!!
I need an economical car that will cover approx 40,000 miles per year. It is a company car BUT I pay for all the fuel so it needs to be economical. It also needs a large boot as I have a small child and I also carry a lot of photographic gear around for a small business I am setting up. Most (90%) of my driving is on my 150 mile daily commute along the M4 at approx 70-75MPH. Few hills and I go out of rush hour so speed is fairly constant. I currently have a 320d touring which is just big enough but I really would like a bigger car. Due to a job change, my budget has also been cut so I can'g get another 320d SE touring. Currently considering the follwoing and would appreciate your thoughts and MPG experiences (if any) but please feel free to add others.
Thanks once again.

Forget anything other than a diesel with a engine bigger than 1.6 if fuel economy is your main criteria. Expect fuel economy of around 60mpg on overall assuming you don't exceed any speed limits.
Go for either Ford Focus Titanium Est 1.6 DPF diesel or Megane 1.5 dCi 106, both are superb to drive and have lots of torque so even when fully loaded they will have plenty of grunt. Top gear in both is around 31mph/1000rpm so motorway driving is relaxed and quiet in them both and hoovering around peak torque at 70 mph. Test drive them both and check out which features you prefer or must have, also service intervals etc. Also worth consider what colour you prefer as some cars don't have particular good colours, and please please don't go for a dark grey, silver or dark silver, they are all but invisible on the road and should be banned on grounds of safety (or a lack of it).
My '97 VW Transporter 2.4D was left facing uphill on my drive for first time in 6 years Xmas Eve. I hate reversing, into my albeit quiet cul de sac, because of kiddies and always drive out nose first. Two days ago it would not start...plenty of juice in battery, so I thought (illogically) that maybe air in fuel line because of the unusual way the van was positioned, and it prefers the view across the Ribble to facing garage doors! Fuel gauge still registering just above red sector, but no harm in emptying my emergency 5 litres in. Turns over several times, then eventually fires. Quick trip around block to warm engine thoroughly, back home in normal parking position, engine won't turn off. Take key out and walk away...engine still running! I finally have to stall in first gear to get the engine to stop. Grrrrrr.........
Any ideas anyone please?

Many thanks both. Confirmed today by AA as stop solenoid on fuel pump jamming. The van now both starts & stops (without having to stall it) but my local garage tell me that to change the solenoid, the job is 2hours+ due to the immobiliser. As the van is worth very little, and will be sold this Spring, I intend to spend as little as possible on it so will cross fingers and hope the problem does not recur in the short term....
