VW Van won't start, then won't stop! - legacylad
My '97 VW Transporter 2.4D was left facing uphill on my drive for first time in 6 years Xmas Eve. I hate reversing, into my albeit quiet cul de sac, because of kiddies and always drive out nose first. Two days ago it would not start...plenty of juice in battery, so I thought (illogically) that maybe air in fuel line because of the unusual way the van was positioned, and it prefers the view across the Ribble to facing garage doors! Fuel gauge still registering just above red sector, but no harm in emptying my emergency 5 litres in. Turns over several times, then eventually fires. Quick trip around block to warm engine thoroughly, back home in normal parking position, engine won't turn off. Take key out and walk away...engine still running! I finally have to stall in first gear to get the engine to stop. Grrrrrr.........
Any ideas anyone please?

Sounds like the stop solenoid on the diesel pump is stuck / faulty or has a dodgy connection to it.

No idea where it is located on this one though.

Also no idea if its coded for the immobiliser like the PSA stuff.

i know the the sprinters are very similar but dont know if they are exact same. if the layout is same as the 97 sprinter then the relay for stop solenoid is under the drivers seat. also the stop solenoid and its single wire connection is clearly visible at the rear top of the injection pump. +voltage on the wire lifts solenoid to allow fuel through.

Many thanks both. Confirmed today by AA as stop solenoid on fuel pump jamming. The van now both starts & stops (without having to stall it) but my local garage tell me that to change the solenoid, the job is 2hours+ due to the immobiliser. As the van is worth very little, and will be sold this Spring, I intend to spend as little as possible on it so will cross fingers and hope the problem does not recur in the short term....
