My sister has finally settled on a car she likes - a 2001 Mitsubishi Shogun Pinin 1.8 GDi Elegance 3dr with 41,000 miles - shes got them to throw in a cambelt change and service, tax, new MOT and has the price at £4200. This is at a Mitsubishi main dealer and comes under the Mitsubishi used car scheme.

The car is very straight with no obvious problems but I did notice slight corrosion on some seams in the rear wheel arches and have just read in the CBC that they have rust issues - anyone able to elaborate on this and what to look out for in particular?

It hasnt put her off the car, but she does want to know where they rust and if by 5 years old, any serious rust issues will have shown themselves?

The seams werent soft at all and it looked like just minor surface corrosion, but when you read they have a known problem, seems worth asking.

Wouls also appreciate any feedback from anyone with experience of the cars.

The same 1.8GDI engine was also used in Volvo S40's and V40's built around 1996-99. There is history of de-coking required, generally around 70,000 miles I vaguely recall. Best hit the web and do some more research! It certainly put me off buying my Volvo with this particular engine!

I have now ordered my new mini - and thanks to everyone on here with advice over the past few months which has finally led to me doing so - and I have been sent a leaflet about "BMW Seal and Protect" which, apparently, "using high-performance sealants, involves a dealership-applied BMW ard Wax to exterior paintwork and, as a result, exterior surface resilience and water repellence is increased by over 300%". According to the blurb, the long-standing protection that this provides simulaneously has a regenerating effect on the paintwork, for a lasting shine. (quote). The cloth upholstery and carpet are also treated with a protection system. This is at the cost of £250 (to include various BMW car cleaning products in a handy carry case). I am assuming (being cynical) that this is not worth the money but does anyone have any views/experience/comments which will help me feel I am not being ignorant and passing up an opportunity to protect my investment here?

Your responses much appreciated as usual.

i ring them later
they have changed the alternator but it still wont start, need to fiddle with wiring

I ask them whether there was actually a problem with the alternator
they say 'well its in now'

have not said anything else for now and am waiting for what they find

any advice about my next move...clearly dont want to pay for unecessary replacement but may be diffcult to prove

Can anyone please explain how the delay of 2-3 seconds between starting the engine and the alternator starting to charge (on vauxhall cars) is achieved, bearing in mind that here are only 2 wires (+ earth) connected?

Hi there every-one. Is it true that at the end of a double yellow line that both the lines have to be crossed over at the end with another yellow line, and if it has not, could one legally park there because it had not been crossed at the end ? Hope ive made sense. Cheers, Graham.

Hi gang. I have a 2002 Mondeo hatch - neither of the reversing lights are coming on when required. I've checked both bulbs and they appear to be OK. In any event, I wouldn't expect both to fail simultaneously. I guess the next thing to check is the switch - can anyone tell me where it's located please? Presumably in the gearbox area? Is there any test I can do to establish whether it's definitely the switch that's at fault? All help appreciated. Thanks. Read more

Have tried the fuse and connections route but haven't cured the problem so far - the lights are still only working intermittently.

Next time I pass the local Ford dealer I'll pick up a new switch and see if that does the trick.

Thanks again for the replies - much appreciated.

Tyreless

About 4 years ago I bought a new Citroen Berlingo which I I have been very happy with it as it is economical and easily carries the vast amount of stuff (and family) on regular trips to Normandy.

However ........ shortly after taking delivery I had a puncture and discovered to my horror that my spare wheel had been stolen. I complained to the dealer about the seeming ease with which the theft had occurred to be told that this was a common problem and had I not been offered the optional anti-theft device? I had not, so one was fitted free of charge (and presumably the salesman got a rocket) but I did point out that I felt that this was a design fault which could be rectified at minimal extra cost at the time of manufacture and I was still out-of-pocket having had to replace the tyre and rim. I was told it was being looked into.

Forward to the present. My daughter took delivery of a new Picasso a month ago and 3 weeks later her tyre was stolen in exactly the same way. Obviously the "thinking about it" had never got further than the thinking stage and I cannot believe that such penny-pinching by Citroen has never been addressed. Or maybe the replacement of tyres and rims and the subsequent fitting of "optional" anti-theft devices contributes to Citroen's profits to such an extent that they made a conscious decision to do nothing.

I think this matter deserves wider publicity. I would certainly advise anyone thinking about buying a new Citroen not to do so unless the dealer agrees to fit, at no extra cost, this essential piece of equipment. What's next - optional door locks? Read more

I bought a s/h car from a dealer years ago but told him I'd only buy it if the tyres were replaced-were just about legal. On collecting it and being happy with the tyres,I noticed that the car next to it on the forecourt had been fitted with the wheels/tyres I had complained about.

I remotely deadlocked and set the alarm on my 1998 Omega as per usual last night. This morning I was unable to open it. It appears that the car's battery has failed (alarm light not blinking) and because of this you cannot use the key to get into the car. Surely there must be a way of opening the car so that I can charge/change the battery?

Hi

My '96 mk4 Fiesta has a leak of some sort and after heavy rainfall the passenger side front footwell is usually wet.

I've tested the seals around the sunroof and front passenger door, which seem OK, and was subsequently quoted around £500 by a Ford franchised garage to put the leak right. Given the age of the car, that's obviously not worthwhile, but before I take my Fiesta to an independent garage is there anything I could check and repair myself?

For example, when I pour water down the windscreen while looking under the bonnet, I can see that quite a bit of the water leaks straight into the rear of the engine compartment - is this normal?

Any help you can offer is much appreciated!

A Tech 2 test has produced the fault code P0400. The problem is an intermittent flat spot that happens occasionally. When the problem occurs the engine management light comes on and Tech 2 shows P0400.

Can anyone suggest what fault this points to please?
