The Auris thread set me thinking - with the 2.2 D4D Auris and the Golf TDI 170 are we at last near to a successor to the late, much-lamented Triumph Vitesse? (The Mark 2, in particular, which had rather less wayward handling than the Mark 1)

I think this is subtly different from the petrol GTI / Civic type R / Focus ST etc. I'm thinking of -

- a smallish, easy to manoeuvre 4-seater
- a big lazy engine, docile enough to be relaxing when you don't need to hurry, but with a good big wallop of acceleration when you do.

Have I missed anything in the last 35 years or has there been a Vitesse-sized gap in the market? I suppose the BMW 3-series qualifies - at a price.

Ideas anyone? Read more

I don't think there is one. I can recall trying to make good progress past what I thought was a Herald many years ago. That was a surprise.

A Focus could well do 1 million miles, Just stock up on a pallet load of rear wheel bearings first.

I am having a problem with the delivery of a car ordered from New Car Discount. After reading some positive comments about them online, I placed an order in October for a new Mazda3 TS2.

The initial delivery estimate for a date in mid November has been repeatedly deferred, most recently to February. I'm currently awaiting replies to my emails and letter requesting an explanation for the delays.

Can anyone please shed any light on whether there is a problem with Mazda UK deliveries? Or a problem with New Car Discount?

Any advice would be greatly appreciated.

Many thanks. Read more

Sounds great to me; my 3 has averaged 25mpg pretty consistently
from new over the last 2500 miles. Admittedly, it is the
MPS...

I forgot to say, mine is only the 1.6, hence my disappointment. 25mpg from the MPS? Whats the matter with you grandma? I *think* the pedal you want is the one on the right! ;-)

Hi,

I am looking for an occasional 7 seater and have a budget of around 12K including trade in. I have narrowed down my search a bit as follows -

*Zafira*
-Pros
Cheap 2nd hand, I can get a May 2006 1.9CDTi for my budget

-Cons
The flex7 seating is not so flexible, the 2nd row bench seat is a bit awkward
Does not have ESP, but does have some other safety features

*Touran*
-Pros
ESP as standard
Seating is more flexible (middle row come out individually)

-Cons
Expensive 2nd hand, would be looking at a 2003/4 model for diesel, 2004/5 for petrol 1.6
Some bad press on here regarding smoke, etc

*Galaxy
- Pros
More space, proper 7 seats
Plenty available 2nd hand, although not too many low milers

-Cons
Quite expensive for a low miler

Umm, that is all I can think of for now. Does anyone have any advice or experience with any of these, or have one to sell in South London/Surrey for around this price? ;-)

Cheers,

Hi there, just a quick question if anyone can shed any light. I'm charging a battery using an external charger, can you overcharge a car battery?

Thanks for that, I'll be careful then. Cheers.

Well, after a grand two days of successful Puma motoring, the little one died.

It's been to the local ford dealer who've diagnosed a broken coil pack and ECU and tell me it's a fiver off a grand to fix it.

I didn't have any warranty from the used independent dealer I bought it from. But my question is, does anyone know if I have a case for the car being 'unfit for purpose' after 2 days and then needing £1000 worth of work?

Thanks for listening

Well, I had the AA out before it went to Ford

It's not fair to imply that Ford are in any way at fault. You mean "before it went to the dealer".

Rattle

In frustrating of rejecting 4 sheds I hastily rushed into buying this N Reg Fiesta for £400.

I am learning so I am not driving the car much, I have driven 10 miles it since Wednesday but every time I start it in the morning its very rattly, the sound is in sync with the engine and increases as revs increase. After 1-2 mins of idling it quietens down but is still there.

I notice it most at the front passenger side of the car, over the engine block it doesn't sound that bad, just the usual pushrod fiesta tappety sound.

I've booked the car in for a service and the mechanic reckons its just the oil that needs changing badly (but he hasn't heared the car).

The engine drives fine and there is no knocking or thumping noises. Could this be the camshaft and if so is it a major job?

Put 20/50 in in summer by all means.

But dont put 10/30 if its as noisy/ratly as it sounds. 15/40 or 15/50 would be far better for it.

Given there are a number of TomTom advocates in the Back Room, they may be interested in the following :

"Isololated number of TomTom GO 910's may be infected with a virus

It has come to our attention that a small, isolated number of TomTom GO 910?s, produced between September and November 2006, may be infected with a virus. The virus is qualified as low risk and can be removed safely with virus scanning software. Appropriate actions have been taken to make sure this is prevented from happening again in the future."

Last week you helped me out with a warning light problem on my 406.
These things seem to run in 3's and true form no sooner had I sorted them than another light as appeared
On the way home from work, I'm assuming that it is the engine management light (shape of an engine right in the middle of the display) came on and stayed on. It wasnt there when I started and came on about 10mins into the journey. From what little information I have been able to get this light can cover a multitude of engine problems. Is there anything obvious I can try (I'v tried diconecting then reconnecting the battery) or will it require a diagnostics test? If it does require a diagnostics test do I have to go to a dealer or are there mobile testers out there
Thanks again for your help,an advise Read more

Any decent garage with the correct diagnostic kit can extract the fault codes from the ECU for you, doesnt have to be a main dealer.

When you have the fault codes to hand it makes the job of finding & fixing the fault a hell of a lot easier.
