Why does the engine in my car shudder violently when the ignition is switched off? Surely it should just drift to a gentle stop? Read more

I'll second that. 130 TDI.

Which particular oil would people recommend for this motorcycle?

I was thinking about the Castrol Magnatec 10w40. The manual just says 10w40 or 15w40.

This engine is based on the hornet engine (but detuned.)

Halfords 10w/40 semi synth is made by Comma and is high
spec, I determined last year that the car and motorbike versions
are the same stuff in different packaging, the car version is
cheaper.

Interesting - didn't know it was made by Comma.

My ZZR600 has been running on this stuff for the last few oil changes and it seems to like it. I bought the last lot for about a tenner on a half price deal.

Rock Oil is good stuff as well, but not so easy to find.

I'm sure there was a thread on this by HJ some time ago.
However, just to let HJ and others know that we have had a letter from our Skoda dealer announcing a change to cambelt intervals - now every four years, regardless of mileage.

This follows advise from VAG based on customer feedback and consultation.

As an aside, does anyone know what the cost of this should be, as we are being quoted a "discounted rate" of £185 inc pars, labour and VAT for a diesel Felicia 03 plate, and not due until April 07 by rights. I'm tempted to wait until it reaches 4 yrs. Read more

Thats the same lump as my Touran, except my dealer says 4yrs/40k! I wonder if VW UK can be any more specific.

I hope someone can shed some light on this one for me. I have a Renault Scenic 1.6 16v 2003 Auto, the gearbox changes up and down quite 'clonky'. Sometimes when changing up into top gear it misses the gear all together, the engine revs then it drops in? This makes the driving experience quite tiring. When it was under the warranty it did go in for this to a Renault dealer and they couldnt find any problems with it? They did say however they 'reset' the gearbox? This did improve things slightly but has gone back to it's old tricks. Does anyone know how to reset the gearbox, or do I simply take one of the battery terminals off for a while? Read more

It's the hydraulic actuators which seem to go in these boxes.
Happened in our Megane when it was 4 years old.
Cost £1500 to get the box fixed by an auto gearbox specialist (Renault wanted £2500, though they did offer to pay 30% of the cost, but it still worked out more than the specialist garage).

If I were you I'd sell or part-ex the car while the gearbox is still working, because it is likely only to get worse.

98 Mondeo with 205/50 R16 tyres.

The fronts have worn on the outside edge of the nearside tyre and inside edge of the offside tyre.
Specific suggestions why.

The tyres have done 21K. I bought the Mondeo with 4 brand new FateO tyres fitted. I know they are not in the top rank of tyres but at least I treat them gently.
I must admit to not giving then a close inspection for about 1.5K
Pressures were as per book and my MoT station rechecked them.

I immediately had a full laser check / adjust done.
One side at the rear was very slightly out.
The front was very slightly out.
The tyre place said this small amount out was unlikely to have caused it.

The drop links were changed 10k ago.
I had the front wheels rebalanced 2K ago and would have anticipated some comments if the wear was already evident.

We do have out rash of road humps but I always take them at vey low speed.

With this wear, although there is plenty of tread depth, I plan to replace them.
I might have got ten per cent more wear out of them but I will be happier replacing them
I do not want to start damaging the replacement tyres. Read more

Crabbing Mondeos dogged Ford during the era your car was made, in fact, they even appeared on BBC's Watchdog TV Programme with Anne Robinson. This was due to the fron subframe being misaligned or loose. I forget the full details, but was the alignment a 3d laser alignment? If not, try getting one of those, and having all wear points checked. Alignment only checks the car with no load with steering dead ahead and stationary, so everything can been fine under these conditions but go awry when on the move!

Just noticed our 55 reg jazz's petrol gauge hasn't moved in over 60 miles and is registering over full....it ain't that economical!

Anyone else had this? I've tried rocking the car, plus opening the petrol cap in case it's in some sort of vacuum but no effect.

Have to drive it some more and see if it's just a one off....

Can't find anything on the web about this.

I'm not the world's most patient person, I know, but isn't a 12 week wait a bit excessive for my new car?

I can accept maybe there's a bit of a delay because it's a popular car, and maybe it takes about a week or two to get it through the factory line and finished off, but that would only account for about six weeks, and surely it can't take another six weeks to get here from mainland Europe?

At the risk of sounding like a three year old on a long journey, why does it take so long? Read more

Do you have any evidence for this?

When I went to the astra assembly plant, there were all sorts rolling off the line together, LHD, RHD, estates, saloons, hatches etc.

Anyone know how to find out the dimensions of a TVR Chimera? Been googling round for ages and had no luck.

Yes I'm trying to find out if one would fit in my garage, MR2's a tight fit but still usable with the mirrors folded in, garage doors are 202cm at their narrowest, rest of garage is 220cm ish (with carpet along the walls!).
Length should be ok, got 430cm to play with without even taking out the work bench.

Thanks for your help guys. Read more

Afraid we're not diyers, so wouldn't attempt to do more than shove fuel in frankly. (Which takes forever - don't be in a hurry!). Always had it serviced at the place we bought it and they charge very reasonable prices - £200-£300 - although it does need a service every 6k. A mate has one as well though, and he does a bit - yes, they are all pretty standard (and cheap) bit, so you can certainly do a fair bit yourself. Easy to access too.

When we were looking I had a hunt for chassis rot - of the four or five we looked at (all at dealers) only one had any slight evidence of that, so it's not hard to find a good 'un. But of course you are ALWAYS better off spending a bit extra on a better car than trying to put one right.

Having said all that, I admit we spent a bit more than you are thinking of on the two we bought, so I don't really know about what you get at that price point.

My wifes 2002 Fiesta 1.4 Zetecs power steering is slightly low. I checked the handbook and it states to use WSA-M2C-195A. Having been to Halfords/motor suppliers, this grade does not seem to be available. Halfords do a 'Ford spec' fluid with the code ESPM 2C 166H.

Can I use this or any universal Ford fluid with no detrimental effect. The 'genuine' Ford fluid is three times the cost of independent makes. Read more

The fluid is approx a fingers width below the minimum mark. Car's just had an mot, so it's not leaking.
