Renault Scenic Auto Gearbox - nemerson33
I hope someone can shed some light on this one for me. I have a Renault Scenic 1.6 16v 2003 Auto, the gearbox changes up and down quite 'clonky'. Sometimes when changing up into top gear it misses the gear all together, the engine revs then it drops in? This makes the driving experience quite tiring. When it was under the warranty it did go in for this to a Renault dealer and they couldnt find any problems with it? They did say however they 'reset' the gearbox? This did improve things slightly but has gone back to it's old tricks. Does anyone know how to reset the gearbox, or do I simply take one of the battery terminals off for a while?

I this the current model? And what is the mileage?

No it's not the very latest model but the old facelifted model, 2003 (03) plate.

Problems with Renault automatics can sometimes be due to the hydraulic distributor or multifunction switch. Unfortunately if out of warranty you could be looking at a fairly big bill. Let us hope that it is something simple.

I find it odd that a main dealer cannot diagnose the fault. Once you have a diagnosis I would write to RCS with a copy of the estimate and ask for their comment.

How many miles has it done?

It nearly done 40k, when we took it into the dealer (Sutton Park Renualt - Burton-On-Trent) it had only done about 15k. I never took it back down due to fear of wasting their time!

Unfortunately your wish not to waste their time may end up with you wasting your money. I would go back and demand some answers.

I pulled the plug on the car yesterday for about 5-6 hours. After I reconected the battery I took it for a spin. The gear change (strangely) seems to have improved, even the drive to work this morning was trouble free? I may take it back in when I have time to get it checked out again.

It's the hydraulic actuators which seem to go in these boxes.
Happened in our Megane when it was 4 years old.
Cost £1500 to get the box fixed by an auto gearbox specialist (Renault wanted £2500, though they did offer to pay 30% of the cost, but it still worked out more than the specialist garage).

If I were you I'd sell or part-ex the car while the gearbox is still working, because it is likely only to get worse.
